This is an impressive state park because of its proximity to Denver and its remote environment. There's a huge lake, wide open grassland, lots of space between most campsites and clean facilities. The bike paths are not crowded, but fully appreciated. Dogs love this place.

The sites are large and many have shade. The bathrooms are newly built and extremely nice and clean, however there were no soap dispensers not soap. I feel strongly that campground bathrooms need to have soap, but especially during the summer of 2020 they should have soap or hand sanitizer. Coin operated showers were clean and well designed. The lake is nice but highly used (not good water for paddleboarding due to speedboats- even at sunrise and sunset). We couldn’t swim due to high levels of blue and green algae.
The park also charges a parking fee of $11 per day. I paid $28 a night for my dry campsite plus another $11 a day to park my rv on my campsite that I already paid for. It was frustrating when family came to hang out and had to pay too.
The many paths in the park are nice and well maintained but little shade on most of them.
I’d have enjoyed it more if the parking fee was less and they had soap in the bathroom.

This is one of the best maintained state camping parks I've ever seen. The facility is beautiful, sites are large, quiet location. Concrete pads, clean picnic tables, raked gravel adjacent. Good AT&T cell service. I entered the park at the East Entrance on a Friday at 10:30 AM. There were 10 cars in queue in front of me and 10 behind me. It took me 20 minutes in that queue to get through the gate. They warn you that if you leave the park and it subsequently fills to capacity they won't let you back in. I left at 11 the following Sunday and the Rangers were turning away cars. That means once you are in you risk not getting back in if the day-pass people fill it to capacity. Since it was a weekend I didn't feel safe leaving the park. Also, Even though you pay a camping fee you also pay a day-pass fee of $11 each day you are there. Alternatively $83 for an annual day-use pass.

This campground is like camping in a city park. Oh - actually it is a city park! Just be aware of this and don't expect some kind of wilderness experience. The campsites offer pretty much zero privacy even though they are well spaced. Camping is basically on a giant lawn with trees interspersed. Cherry Creek State Park is a lovely city park with lots of paths and pretty meadows and trees around a reservoir. It's a busy popular park with locals.
I noticed that I could easily hear the roar of the city traffic on roads/highways nearby. The campground also got REALLY busy around the weekend with family groups. It seemed most campsites in the tent section had 2-3 huge tents, 2-3 cars and at least 8 people. So, it was noisy. (I stayed in summer though so I'm sure other seasons are much more mellow)
If you need to be in Denver this is a great place to stay but it ain't cheap. Maybe it is cheaper than a hotel in Denver (that's what I was thinking) but $28 a night to pitch your tent plus the daily state park fee which is $10/day (or get an annual pass for $80+) adds up. I believe it is $40/night for hookup sites. Oh and now all CO State Parks require reservations for camping. Be sure to do this in advance. Camp hosts and rangers were really nice.
If you have your bike with you the park is a lovely place to ride, or take your kayak or SUP down to the water. You can walk out of the park and to a bus stop or light rail (about a mile I think) and stores and restaurants are not too far away. Probably better to have a bike or car though.
I would say the biggest positives of this park are the access to the city, the clear cell signals and the fabulous restroom facilities. There are (paid) showers and flush toilets. I did my laundry at 6am while charging my phone and sipping my coffee. That was pretty nice compared to the typical vault toilet (or no toilet) and no running water of my typical campsites. I appreciated it!

There was a lot of snow at the campground which was so pretty, and only the Abilene loop was open in January. It was great to have full hookups at a state park. The sites in the Abilene loop are spacious. The camp hosts were so friendly and we enjoyed talking with them. We would definitely stay here again if in the Denver area. Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile all worked well.

I give it a 4 star rating because while we were there, we had to switch to a different site and ran into some problems... Check out is at 12:00pm, but check in isn't until 1:00pm, so instead of waiting around the park or going outside of the park for an hour, the morning we had to move sites, we scoped out the new spot and waited until 12:00 for the previous campers to move out and we moved the trailer and set up camp. The camphost came by to let us know that check in wasn't until 1:00pm, but we explained to him that we were coming from the next loop over and just moving sites. He told us that as long as we're ok with the site not being properly prepped (it wasn't dirty at all), then we can just tell the ranger we moved sites early if the ranger came by.
An hour later, while my husband was at work and I was out with friends, my husband gets a call from the campground office saying that our trailer is about to get towed!! They thought that our trailer was from the previous campers and that they still hadn't checked out. That's understandable, but if they had the ability to find our contact information, knowing the trailer parked at the site is ours, then wouldn't they have been able to figure out that we had simply moved to the new site early...? Gah... Thankfully it all worked out and the trailer didn't get towed, but that was a bit scary. Especially because our dogs were in the trailer with the AC blasting! We had never run into this problem at other campgrounds when we moved sites... At least the office people were nice about it and we were able to clear up the confusion.
Despite all of that though, I'd actually stay there again. Overall it was a great campground.

There are several full hook up loops, a dry camping loop, and very clean laundry and shower facilities. Get reservations, this place is basically always full in season and people line up for walk up spots every day.
We stayed in both hook up and dry sites, and preferred the hookup loops which were bigger and much better site quality. There's only a few sites in the dry loop that would really work for RV's, and it's hard to tell from the website based on size alone.
