Be prepared to wait if you are checking in on a Friday afternoon. There are over 1000 campsites and only one entrance (with very slow WIFI) for everyone to funnel through. Check in was easy but it took about 45 minutes to get through.
Our site was nice - both long and wide with plenty of room between neighbours. However, there was a LOT of poison ivy on and near the campsites (and on most trails). We wore long pants all weekend as a precaution.
There are a lot of options for families - the hikes are all relatively short and have varied terrain. The Carolinian was a favourite - the boardwalks, stairs and lookouts were a hit. The Savannah Trail made for a great bike ride - pretty smooth and with lots of small hills and curves to make it interesting. We used the day beach as it was less crowded and more scenic (short walk over the dunes). I am not sure if this was typical but the day we were there, there were lots of waves to jump but also an undertow - it was too much for the smaller ones.
We had good cell service with Rogers.

This is a very nice park with some small quirks. We stayed in the Dunes area. We did not receive a campground map when we checked in, though that would have made a difference because it is a pretty poorly signed park. The camp roads are gravel, tight, and apparently two way, although there is now way there is room for two vehicles to pass. The water spigots are sprinkled throughout but you will block the road if you try to fill up at one. And the electric is shared between two sites. But our 25 foot power cord was at least 10 feet shy of reaching to the box. That said, the sites are wooded, large and well spaced. It was quite quiet, despite being fairly crowded. Bring a bike and enjoy exploring.

Very large campground, 860 sites +. Bike trail, hiking trails, boat rentals, No full hook-ups with only two dump stations. We left during week and didn’t have any problems.

We come here at least twice a year. And make it our go to campground. We prefer the Riverside campground in the radio free section, so in general you are amongst others who also just want to enjoy the sounds of the woods, not the same garbage you can enjoy at home or work. Being a Michigander all my life, I am always disappointed by the lack of privacy in most Michigan campgrounds. This however is different and lots of privacy and space between most sites. I love the booking website states privacy ratings and shade ratings. They have bikes, canoes, fishing equipment, and paddleboats to rent. The beach is amazing as well. Nearby grand bend is fun to explore with little shops.
