Petenwell Wilderness County Park

While many county park campgrounds can feel cramped, Wilderness County Park in Juneau County Wisconsin is the exact opposite. The key is to find a site that works for you. Top of the list for us is privacy followed by cell service since we both work on the road. This campground has more than 100 sites, but our newfound favorite location are sites 109-127. Each site is large - both wide and deep - and back up to Petenwell Lake, which is a reservoir created by human made dams on the Wisconsin River. Petenwell Lake is the second largest lake in Wisconsin. Several of the sites in this section of the campground have sandy beach that is accessible if you look for the trails down to the shoreline.

The other side of the campground - sites 1 - 33 specifically, are quite crowded, and although the first 12 sites or so have lake views, you'll be right on top of your neighbors. If you're looking for a truly remote site, look at sites 54 - 87. Again, these sites are spacious and private, but cell service may be bad in this part of the park.

Very peaceful, although we were among a minority not having boat. Site was along a ridge with a minimally obstructed view of Petenwell Lake. Beautiful breezes kept it very comfortable. Staff was very helpful overall. Entrance is little steep with speed bumps, but just fine after that.
