In mid- to late April everything is in bloom at Natchez State Park. That makes for beautiful sight seeing, and a whole lot of bugs. As in swarms.
We rode bikes for exercise and to outrun the insects. Beware though, there is a small neighborhood a couple miles from the park (Wycliff Rd. ?) where residents keep angry dogs for protection. And some are not confined, so be ready to beat them in a race. It's exhilarating.
As noted, the main road to the park is closed, so proceed another couple miles up rt. 61 to Tate Rd., and follow makeshift signs. That road isn't great but you'll have no problems if you're careful.
We would stay at Natchez State Park on a future trip, but more likely in autumn.

The alternate route is only a couple miles north BUT it involves 4-5 miles of some of the worst "paved" roads I have ever seen. The narrow road surface is ROUGH, the potholes are many, and the trees hanging low and encroaching from the sides make getting to the park a nightmare. Granted, I pull a 40 foot 5th wheel 13'5" tall and I had to dodge roof killer branches. The site was an easy back-in and the stay was pleasant. But I dreaded the departure route! As others have mentioned, the park COULD be pretty nice, but is poorly maintained.

The rest of A isn’t that bad and is typical for state camp grounds. We drove through B campground which does have some sites with a lake view. We were traveling in January so most sites were empty and we had good weather so that was a plus. We enjoyed our stay because it was about 15 minutes to Natchez. If ever in that area we would stay again!!

We entered from 84 despite warnings about poor roads. The access roads we’re plenty big, but from this direction They were poorly maintained. You can see where many holes were filled, but many remained and it was still a 5 mph ride. We came in and out from the 64 side. There were numerous buildings that were falling down. Add to this the garbage on the berms and we were disappointed.
We were in site 43 (loop B) and for 2 nights were the only people in the loop. It was obviously quiet but the bugs were able to focus solely on us. Horse flies and non-murder hornets were leading the charge.
Cell service was decent with our booster. The dump station was fine and the actual site was level and plenty big.
I was able to bike to the lake and out to the main road. Wildlife sighted included foxes, turtles and feral dogs. The dogs helped me keep my heart rate up for a fair part of the ride.
We loved Natchez and the Natchez trail. Fat Mamas, Natchez Brewing and the Under the hill district were great.
I would gladly pay a couple extra buck a night if it would help to keep the park in better shape

Our main site, B loop 25, was a back in. It consisted of a level concrete slab with a raised concrete patio that was on a hill about 8 feet away from the pad. Utilities were 50 and 30 amp power and water located at the left side. We had a rough table, fire pit and a raised grill. The sites were nicely spaced. Before we could set up camp, I had to borrow a shovel from Mr. Ranger to clear off a layer of mud from the left rear corner of the slab. Erosion over years had allowed dirt and grass to take over and I needed the full site to fit us and our towed. The park was full as it was Thanksgiving and there was not another spot I could move to at that time. We did move to site three in the A loop after a number of days as our site turned into a lake. We had to step in up to three inches of water the day after we arrived as it had rained heavily. We should have expected as much because of the layer of mud we encountered upon arrival.
We noted that there was pretty much zero attention paid to rules and regs by park staff. Multiple vehicles at some sites parked on the grass and partly blocking roads created driving hazards. Dogs and cats (yes cats) ran free. After the rain the paved roads may as well have been mud bogs. You could not walk without sloshing through mud. There is a serious drainage problem here.
The setting is spectacular. Nestled into a forest of mature hardwoods I can believe that it could be a peaceful paradise. Just not during the season were attended. Loud Thanksgiving parties, the rain and mud did not make for a pleasant stay. Many of the sites are under large oak trees. We spoke with one camper that had to leave early as their trailers roof was hard and the sound of the acorns hitting it kept them awake all night.
We were here for two weeks using this as a base to visit the very interesting city of Natchez and the Trace.
There are no services within walking distance but a short drive to the City of Natchez has all the amenities needed.
We paid $22 per night and felt we received fair value for our dollar. Park needs to be better policed and maintained. We would stay here again but never again in loop B site 25 or in the fall.

Pleasant campground stay although our particular site could have used some love. No grill, rough picnic table, and the fire pit had heaved making it unusable. But...it was pleasant here, paved sites, quiet with clean bathrooms. Decent ATT & Verizon service for most needs except streaming

The sites vary in size and have electric and water, fire ring and picnic table. Our site had access to the lake. The bathhouse on the "B" loop (which is where we were) seems newer and has great hot showers and laundry facilities. There is only one washer and drier and are only a $1 each. There is also a soda machine in the laundry room. The whole facility is well maintained and clean.
Be sure to drive through both loops to find the site that is right for you. There are both pull through and back in sites.
We found the park to be fairly quiet and had a decent amount of wildlife including deer that roam around close at night.
The town of Natchez is not that far away and if you are looking for a great place for lunch, try the Magnolia Grill on the water front!

We stayed here March 17 - 19, 2018. Excellent stop for exploring the Natchez Trace Parkway, Vicksburg, and Jackson areas. Clean, neat, and taken care of. They will be doing road work shortly so take heed. If you follow the GPS come off I-84 it will take you in the back way which is very rough and in some spots unpaved and very soft.

Water is good, but tastes treated... a good filter (like the Camco TastePURE- I have no affiliation) helps. Clean power at my site. Level sites on concrete pads. There is a "Bathhouse" with clean restrooms and showers, as well as a washer and dryer. Not bad at $1 per load. There is a nice park area down by the park office. It's on a lake and has large open areas and a nice playground for the kids. I was surprised to not find much in the way of hiking trails given the large space the park occupies. But, that may be because it is located next to the Natchez Trace Parkway. If you haven't driven the Trace, put it on your list. One of the most beautiful, serene drives in America (444 miles worth). Plan to drive it down to Natchez for a day and soak up some great history.
