First let me say that we camped here in the winter (beginning of Feb) so there was no one else camped here (except the camp host who we never saw). Basically we had the place to ourselves. First let me say that we camped here in the winter (beginning of Feb) so there was no one else camped here (except the camp host who we never saw). Basically we had the place to ourselves. It could be a different story in summer when this place may get packed. We also drove up 35 from Silver City...if you take hwy 15 you'll have a white knuckle drive.
There are a variety of camping spots including dry camping ($10) and partial hook-ups (30 amp and water) ($15) with an on-site dump station. There are two bathrooms but neither has showers. Many of the outer sites are suitable for small rigs (with no slides) or tents but site 16 is HUGE. It's also a pull-thru and can easily accommodate rigs larger than our 32 feet. I believe Wheelin' It stayed here in their 40 or 42 foot diesel? Site 16 also has a lake view.
There are trails to lake which lead to the dam. Very nice hiking and we ran across a deer and her fawn. There are also other nearby hikes and we HIGHLY recommend the Purgatory Chasm Trail. It's maybe a mile loop that leads you to an amazing wash with sheer walls...like a micro Grand Canyon you can walk through.
Downside...absolutely NO cell or wifi in the area. None, zero, zilch. This is truly a get away place. I read 4 books and loved every minute. Be sure to check out Gila Cliff Dwellings and splurge on the Gila Hot Springs (only $5 per person to soak).
Tales From the Mutiny would stay here again
