As previously said, safe place to wander about to McCarthy without your Rv…you leave it at the park and drive to and back, but not in 1 day (too long a drive for us) so we stayed in a tent that we brought just for that! As previously said, safe place to wander about to McCarthy without your Rv…you leave it at the park and drive to and back, but not in 1 day (too long a drive for us) so we stayed in a tent that we brought just for that! McCarthy is fun! But the Kennecott mine tour is amazing! What they achieved in the early 1900 is simply put: incredible! Worth the 50$/night to leave the Rv behind!

This is a nice full hookup campground outside Chitina Ak. Sites 5-9 are in the trees. The park is quiet with great views of the Mountains. This is a great place to leave your rig and make the Drive to McCarthy. Others were also leaving their Class As and Bs and going out to McCarthy. This is a nice full hookup campground outside Chitina Ak. Sites 5-9 are in the trees. The park is quiet with great views of the Mountains. This is a great place to leave your rig and make the Drive to McCarthy. Others were also leaving their Class As and Bs and going out to McCarthy. One camper was gone the three days we were there, so it appears a safe place to leave it. There is gas, but no diesel in Chitina so fill before coming in.
The road to McCarthy isn’t the greatest but you can make it in a passenger car without problem. The hiking and glacier exploring at McCarthy is epic. Well worth a trip. A guide with crampons for exploring the glacier is worth it. I hiked the glacier in trail runners and did okay. But you can’t climb the steep parts.
Your gps will not take you to this park. Instead look for the Health Center sign about 4 miles before you get to Chitina. Turn left. Walk down to the river and watch the fish traps.

This RV Park is small, maybe 20 sites, and is run by one of the local Native corporations. It appeared to be completely self service. I had put in a request via email, and received a response, but saw no one working at the location the hours I was there. This RV Park is small, maybe 20 sites, and is run by one of the local Native corporations. It appeared to be completely self service. I had put in a request via email, and received a response, but saw no one working at the location the hours I was there. Basic parking-lot style campground with electric and water at each site, plus picnic tables. It was over 20 miles off the main highway, down a curvy hilly road near Chitina, AK. If you like remote locations with electric this is for you. There was only one other RV there during my stay. Would be fun to get a few families together to visit and camp here.
