White Rock Mountain Recreation Area Campground

I made a last minute reservation for a quick weekend trip and there were plenty of spaces still available (but this may have been because of the rainy weather). It is about 12 miles on a dirt road but it was well maintained (some motorcyclists came up and down in the rain and had no problems). I wouldn't recommend a camper or trailer as the sites are really not set up for anything other than tent camping. Overall, I really enjoyed how quiet, cool, and green it was as well as the beautiful outlook and trail access on site.

Long rough ride up the mountain, very muddy when wet, but this is a wonderful place to car camp or perhaps take a small camper. It has evidently been reopened recently by the forest service under private management. Very friendly helpful people. However, don’t go without a reservation. I went on a weeknight in late September only to discover all sites had been reserved on line. It was late in the day and they were nice enough to let me sleep in my car at the OHT access parking lot located on the property. Only charged me the standard $5.00 parking fee.

White Rock Mountain is a perfect non-electric camping spot. The campsites 1-8 are spread apart enough and site 9, the group site, might as well be in a different park! It's almost a city block away from all the other camp sites. There's no electric or sewer hook-ups and most spots would not be suitable to anything larger than a pop-up. There is central potable water and a couple of vault toilets available.

We absolutely loved hiking the Rim Trail around the park, and it is a trail head for the Ozark Highland Trail. We did simple 2-3 mile pack hikes along the OHT and hung our hammocks in the trees. The Rim Trail is simple and accessible by all HOWEVER it is a high cliff area so small kids should be watched very closely, and the OHT offers hiking for all abilities.
