Whiskey Creek Beach NW

The Whiskey Creek Beach NW campground is well off the beaten track along the Strait of Juan de Fuca with views of mountainous Vancouver Island, BC. There are a variety of funky tent and RV sites and even funkier cabins. There are flush toilets, showers, water and electric hook-ups. The uncrowded RV sites come with fire pit and table. The atmosphere is faded, low-budget but the hosts and the scenery make it a pleasant experience. There were a lot of happy young families when we were here. Full hook up RV is $63/night.

Winter Rates - 129 and 143 This place is very clean, quiet, peaceful and equipped with the essentials.
The sound of the waves on the beach, the ocean air and the view make this such a peaceful and relaxing place to stay. I was able to work remote by connecting to my mobile hotspots.

First of all the view from our site was gorgeous. You can see the water from almost everywhere on the property. The walk down to the water is fairly short, the beach is narrow and rocky at high tide. There is a more sandy beach down the road that the waterfront cabins are on.

The RV sites up in the top area are oddly laid out. We pulled into A6 so the hook-ups were on the proper side but we didn't pull forward enough to hook up the sewer (our two hoses were about 2 feet short) because it started to slope down more than we were comfortable with and also because if anyone moved into site A7 we would be too close to them. We had no problems leveling where we parked. The fire pit for our site was down at the bottom of the slope so we had a very large site. No one camped in A7 next to us but if they had they would have had to drive through our site to get there and even though A7 has hook-ups, I have no idea how a trailer could go there, it was fully sloped. Site A5 was behind us and it seemed to be a challenge for the people to situate their RV in the space. Even with the challenges of the odd campsites in this section it is manageable. All utilities worked as they should. We just pulled forward before leaving to empty our tanks.

This wasn't an extremely noisy place, pretty moderate while we were there but not super quiet and peaceful, you are too close to everyone else to expect that.

We just hung around the property but there are many places to visit nearby: Dungeness Spit, Salt Creek, Lake Crescent, Crescent Beach.

Rachel checked us in as was very nice. We did not use the bathroom or shower provided but from our vantage point a saw they cleaned it a couple times a day.

We will definitely visit Whiskey Creek Beach NW again.

We stayed in site B2 after on Memorial Day and the following day.

The site was level, no need for leveling blocks.

30 amp was available, as was 50 amp and regular 20 amp house socket. Breakers on all of them and no issues with brown outs at all.

Don’t expect much in the way of cell service...we had 1x or 3G the whole time, but we were happy to disconnect from everything and relax.

The views were amazing and the sunsets even better. Clear skies looking at Canada was a real treat.

It was a little windy on the first night and I pulled our awning back in b/c it started flapping around a little and I wanted to avoid any damage.

The site was a little muddy, so don’t forget to have some good shoes or boots available.

The only issue we had was pulling out of the site to leave. Our rear stabilizers dragged along the incline of the ground and tore up a bit of their grass. Thankfully no damage but just beware of the incline and the low points on your trailer

The views form any of the sights are fantastic. The campground is terraced into the side of a gentle sloping bluff but that is what gives it the views and quirks. We stayed March 26-28 during the Coronavirus mess. The park was pretty empty. This place has a little of everything cabins, tent sites, RV sites, and it looks like a few full time people. All the sites seem well spaced out so you don’t feel cramped at all. It’s about 15 minutes from the 2 main campgrounds in the area where they do pack you like sardines. They recently upgraded most of the power boxes to 20, 30, and 50 amp style. Cell service is spotty and no WIFI which I like.

This campground is a HIDDEN GEM!
It is about 2 miles off Highway 112, the road both paved and gravel is well maintained. The last quarter mile or so to the campground is one lane, there would be no problem with a large or tall rig.

We stayed here for a week in a 5th wheel at a back in site over looking the strait. Though it doesn't have all the amenities you would find at a KOA, what it lacks is made up with pure beauty, quiet settings, friendly caring owners and the most relaxing camping experience you will find anywhere.

Sites are spacious, well maintained grassy gravel pads, but be prepared to to spend a little more time leveling your rig, though not terribly bad it can be a challenge. Each site has a picnic table and fire ring. Water pressure is great, my regulator is set at 50 psi and this is what I had the entire stay. Cell service is good 3 bars of T-Mobile LTE. If you want TV we have Dish and had great satellite reception.

A great campground to relax - a real diamond in the rough.

This review is from an RV'er point of view.

I guess I'm the odd one that doesn't find this place incredible. Let me explain.

Pros -

The views are spectacular. You are camped right along the Strait of Juan de Fuca. It's gorgeous and the sound of the waves is lovely.

Also, there's plenty of room around your campsite and it's all grassy. This was nice for us and our dog that likes to be out on her stake and sunbathe.

Cons -

I don't think the people who started this park have ever RV'ed a day in their life. The layout is just odd.

Our site was incredibly unlevel. I see some reviewers stayed in sites B1 or B2 which did look better. We backed into our site and it was unlevel every which way to Sunday. There was a huge rut in the ground from a tire right along near the hookups. We had to make sure and avoid it when backing in. There was also a dead square patch of grass where it looked like a long-term person had a mat and also right by that was a doormat someone had left and was never picked up. It was half grown over by grass. But ok, whatever.

Back to backing in. It felt like our trailer was going down, down, down. We chocked the hell out of our tires because it felt like the trailer might keep rolling backward and off the little cliff. lol We needed several blocks on one side to level. Our trailer is double axle but one tire needed 2 blocks while the other needed 3.

We stopped on the most level patch we could that would still keep us in range of the hookups which were on the wrong side for our trailer, but there was no other way to get the trailer in there the other direction. But no big deal, we used our extensions on water and sewer and our power reached.

The sewer was on a bit of an elevation incline so when it came time to dump our tanks we had to play a fun game of lift the sewer hose at different points to get all the turds out. lol

We finally got leveled and secured and I was feeling better, but I did hope to god that no other RV was going to show up and try to get into site A7. What the park map doesn't show you is there are tons of elevation changes all over the place. The entrance area to A6 and A7 is the same spot which is in front of A6. To go in from between A5 and A7 would have you going down a 3-4 foot elevation drop. Probably ok for a vehicle but not with an RV or trailer. So to get to A6 they'd have to be god-like at backing a trailer around us in a semi-circle to get to the hookups. Perhaps the park realizes this now as no one showed up for that spot except one night that a tent camper was there with their car.

Sites A1, A2, and A3 look like pull-throughs on the park map, but they are not. There is an elevation dip in front of them so you'll have to back in. A1 was a semi-permanent resident (he told us his wife was there on work assignment for several months). A3 looked to be a rental motorhome that stays there all the time. We saw several guests come and go in it. Site A5 looked to be fairly easy to back into but it was smaller than our area. We saw a teardrop camper stay there 2 nights but that was it.

If you stay here, try to get sites B1 or B2. Specifically B2. It's like one big pull-through for both spots. The exit is in front of B2 so when you leave you can just pull forward.

B2 is 50 amp only. B1 is 30 amp only.

A5, A6, and A7 were 30 amp only.

Let's talk about the power because this is my BIGGEST COMPLAINT!

Brown outs. Brown outs everywhere. At least that's what I think was happening. None of the power boxes I looked at had breakers. We are pretty sure we were sharing the same circuit with other sites and/or cabins. The first few days were fine, but when Labor Day weekend approached we started having episodes where our RV surge protector would kill the power to our trailer. It would come back on only to die again almost immediately. This cycle would continue over and over several times before it would stop and just stay on. At first we thought we were doing something to cause it to go out, but we were barely running anything. No AC, no mircowave, no TV. Only our laptops were plugged in that really draw much power.

It got worse too. Over the weekend it would start the on/off cycle (brown outs?) during the night when we were sleeping. I'm guessing maybe other sites were kicking on electric heaters? I don't know but it was driving me crazy. The first night this happened it started at 4 AM. When our power comes back on there's a loud BEEP and then the whirl of our TV hard drive starting up. Then the power died again. Then BEEP back on and then off. BEEP off BEEP off BEEP off. It wouldn't stop. I finally went out side and unplugged our trailer entirely so I could go back to sleep.

The next night the same thing. Unplugged again. This happened several nights in a row to where we finally just unplugged the trailer when we went to bed. Ridiculous.

Maybe we should have said something to the owners, but I was kinda over the place and just wanted to get our stay over with and leave. Also, I probably just didn't see them but it seems like the place is ran by their kids. When I checked in I was helped at the office by a girl that looked around 14. She showed me on the map where our site was. When I asked if it was a back-in or pull through she stared blankly at me and then just said "you can park however you like."

There were two young teen girls that I saw going around and cleaning the rental RVs and a young teen boy that I saw emptying garbage cans and chopping wood daily. I tried to wave at him or say hello but he just kept his head down and chopped.

It's honestly a shame because this place could be really awesome but it needs some serious TLC. What once looked like decorative fences and steps are grown over and falling down. The fence/rail that led down the steps from our site to the elevation below us was literally fallen down in places and rotting on the ground. Old decorations were dirty and overgrown.

The toilets on the map are porta potties and the shower was a small shack way down by the beach that you had to pay $3 for and get a code from the office. I usually use the park showers even if it's a pay one but this was a nope from me. It's pretty far from our site and a good descend to the beach and then climb back up to our site. I can't report on how clean/nice it was since I didn't use it.

We overheard a man saying that half the property was sold a couple years ago. Indeed the property is split in half by a rope that has "private property" signs hanging from it. On the other side are semi-old to old RVs that I'm not sure if they are rentals or residents or what. That side was doing some sort of road improvement or something as they had some heavy machinery working over there.

Our AT&T worked well enough for us to do what we needed online. The only issue was that at times it would disconnect from the AT&T tower and connect to a Canadian tower (either ROGERS or TELUS). We have international data turned off to avoid charges so when this happened we couldn't use the internet. We couldn't figure out how to force it back onto AT&T and just had to wait until it switched itself back over. Not sure what was up with that.

So I don't know. Maybe I'm picky, but I was not charmed by this place at all. Again, the views are AMAZING! But $55 a night amazing with all the issues we had? No. At least not for us. We won't be going back with our RV. Maybe the cabins on the beach are better. I hope they have bathrooms otherwise your $150 a night gets you a view and a porta potty. Also, the Eagle's Nest cabin by the RV area is just an old RV with a porch built onto it. FYI.

If you take an RV ask for site B2 and make sure you use 50 amp or have a 50 amp adapter. Good luck.

We stayed here a couple of nights after seeing some reviews online. They are currently upgrading their electric to 30 and/or 50 amp service (ours was a 50) so make sure you have converters from 50, 30 and 20 to what you need. They staff were super friendly and even stopped by on our last day to see how our stay was. Sites are grassy and somewhat unlevel which required some leveling blocks but manageable. I think the view would have been spectacular but because of the BC wildfires the air quality was bad. We will be back to check it out when the skies are clear. The last mile in is on gravel so take it slow to keep from dusting up the nearby residents. Also, ignore the signs on the way in that say “No overnight camping”. I recommend making reservations since the RV sites are very limited.

We stayed here July 4th thru 7th 2018.

This is a private family owned campground with full hookups and amazing views of Vancouver Island across the channel.

We used this as a launching point for Olympic National Park, Port Angeles and Vancouver Island. It was the perfect location for that.

We felt genuinely welcomed by the owners and other guests, a feeling you don't always get at private campgrounds. We arrived the afternoon of the fourth of July and were greeted with a small fireworks display and great hospitality. It was a perfect fourth of July for us after travelling most of the day.

We would recommend Whiskey Creek Beach NW to anyone. Either for a launching point for area attractions or just to relax and get away. They have cool little cabins as well as RV sites.

Cell service here was pretty good as well.

You will not be disappointed. Views of Vancouver Island are incredible. My brother and family stayed in a cabin and we had a full hookup site. Cabins feel like you are on a boat. Our kids played in tide pools for hours and found starfish, crabs, sea enemies etc.. During the day we spent time at Lake Cresent which isn’t too far. The couple that owns the property are so friendly. We would definitely return.
