West Fork San Juan River Dispersed Camping

Multiple boondocking sites along the road past the campground. I would not recommend taking a large trailer past the bridge site. If you get in a bind there is a turn around at the end of the road by a hiking trail, but this could be blocked by cars.

Good for smaller trailers and tents. Road in great shape.

No cell coverage.

No for a big rig. Beautiful area. But do not venture in without scoping it out first if you have a big rig. Yes, a handful of sites could accommodate a big rig but if they are full, getting turned around sand back out become a serious problem. Also, absolutely no cell service.

We decided to venture down to the river spot which is past the Wes st Fork Campground and afternoon a single lane bridge. We camped at a large flat spot with fire rings right on the left before the west fork campground. Easy to get in and out with our Class C- no internet access on either AT&T or Verizon. We found this spot right before the West Fork campground. It was perfect and flat. There are also dispersed sites past the campground but they are for much smaller rigs. There’s two nice sites by the river too if you get lucky!

Stayed here for 1 night while passing through 01 May, 2020. Drive 1 mile past the formal campsite and there are about 8 great dispersed camping sites. Had a great, fairly level camping spot right near the river for my 13’ trailer, but a larger rig could easily fit. Road to sites is a little washboarded, but not a nail biter.

There is a paid campground here but there’s plenty of BLM beyond the campground. This review is for the dispersed camping.

I stayed here mid May ‘19 just after the last of the snow storms. It was pretty cold still, down in the 20’s but the spot along the river was incredible. Easy to stumble across and easy to never want to leave.

The $22. is without the Senior pass. The camp host does a great job cleaning up the campsites and the vault toilets (cleanest I've seen). There were very few people here during our stay.
