The road into Washington Gulch is paved to the end of the small subdivision by Long Lake. After that it becomes a two lane maintained dirt road that is oiled for dust until the Snodgrass Trailhead. Past this trailhead the road narrows to 1.5 car widths and is very winding. Care should be taken due to blind curves and fast Jeep drivers. It is doable for any large rig if one goes slow. The road at this point is less well cared for but still passable for all rigs. The further back one travels, the worse the road becomes and eventually degrades into 4X4. Note: in early season the road may be blocked by snow or landslides.
All sites in this portion of the valley receive strong winds on most days.
This back in campsite is full sun and is the first in a row of sites. It is close to the neighbor on one side. A great site for solar or Starlink users. The access road has a sharp turn so larger rigs may need to back into the area to access the site. This site is far enough back that it does not receive much blown dust off the main road. It also has nice views of the valley and Gothic.

The pros:
- The views are stunning
- Strong data
- Road in decent shape and not too challenging up to this point.
The cons:
- No solitude
- The cows can be loud and right outside of your window (free range grazing)
- Could get pretty muddy after rain
JennGrover would stay here again

The campsites are designated sites in a few sections of the area. First when you come in, to the right of the toilets (which are composting and not stinky FYI for you tent campers), there are a few sites that larger rigs could possibly fit and are easy to get to. There is also a small hill right there with a couple spots. However, don’t go very far up the road to the right unless you have a high clearance vehicle, the road is deeply rutted and there are only a couple small campsites there anyway.
To the left there is a lower section in the valley and an upper section on a hill. The lower section is harder to get into for RV’s because of the tight turn required, and that road has fairly deep ruts as well. The upper section on the hill overlooking the meadow is easier to get into and has a good amount of sites with great views, but it gets crowded first. That is the best area for big rigs in the whole place. The road continues past both these sections but is steep and narrow and definitely NOT for big rigs. There’s a sign posted alluding to this. Vans, small campers and tents will be fine and there are quite a few more small campsites up there.
There are several trails nearby, and it’s beautiful. You’re in a valley surrounded by mountains and hills, flowers (in summer) and wildlife. Cows came the last few days we were there. A stream is accessible from the back of the campsites which is lovely.
Some things to know: The road in is bumpy but doable for most vehicles, even large rigs. Just go slow. It is single lane for part of the way and difficult/impossible to pass should you encounter another rig. May be smart to have someone walk/bike ahead once you get to the trees where it narrows, to make sure no one is coming and warn them that you are. We had great data with a booster, averaged 2-3 bars of cellular, LTE on TMobile and Verizon. Weekends fill up Friday and Saturday and clear out Sunday. There are a lot of sites, you shouldn’t have trouble finding one other than maybe Saturday evening. Crested butte has a dump station with potable water in town that you can hit up before and after, small fee for both. $5 for water and $10 to dump, I believe. This was a great site, we would definitely stay here again.

I haven't seen anyone comment on the cows yet. Many grazing on the main camping area. We had to scout around for a site without stinky cow pies. Otherwise this is a great area. Seems to be many semi-local types who are camping long term higher up. Quite a few older 4wd vehicles coming down into town before 8 am.
