When we arrived the Hen House Unit and Headquarters building were closed, they are paving that section. The Walnut Ridge unit was open so we proceded to our site. Later the host let us know the office was just closed for lunch and we went beack officially check in. All was well. This park was originally laid out for tenters. As a result many of the sites have the picnic table and/or fire ring on the hookup side of the RV. We were in a small cul de sac with no other sites occupied so it was very quiet for our entire stay. The restrooms are small and rustic. There a few miles of easy hiking trails the bugs were not too bad. We enjoyed our stay.

We stayed in the Walnut Ridge Unit whitch is on the north side of US 190. There is opportunity for cycling, hiking and canoeing. The park rents canoes.
I will stay here again, probably in the Hen House Ridge Unit.

Walnut Ridge sites are located on north side of highway about 5 minutes from park office. Nice campsites, very large. 525 was covered in leaves (inches deep), but we made it work. If your site backs up to the water, you can fish from it, but not great water access from majority of sites...just too much foliage. Best place we found to fish was the canoe/kayak launch on Hen House side of the park. Nice dock with calm water off the main lake waters. Dump station had easy access. We will stay there again.

GREAT cell/data. Verizon 4-5 bars and fast speeds on hotspot. AT&T 4 bars to full 5G in some places, but iffy data on cell phone hotspot.
Cons: Lumpy road. The bench and fire pit are on the backside of the trailer. Tree makes it difficult backing in the site easily from one side. Our site was dirty (we had to pick up a bunch of trash) when we got here and park hosts don’t seem to be in charge of this maintenance.
Fantastic site and comfy park! Even with the cons listed above, this is one of the top 3 sites in the park, if not the best, and is surprisingly private considering how open it is, because the sites are so huge. It’s on the Walnut Ridge side which has a more raw feel to it than the Hen House side and the sites are no exception. The roads are narrow on both sides but no problem for a 26’ TT like ours. Stunning views and extremely peaceful in general. We felt so refreshed every day being in that setting.
There was noise from 190, but nothing disruptive. Our brains tuned it out after the first day and not much night traffic. If you live in the country, that may be harder for you to do so if that’s the case, you might want to choose a site on the Hen House side.
The hiking is not great but since there are two sides to the park, we were able to create two 10-mile hikes. So it works.
All in all, we really enjoyed our stay. Very peaceful park if you pick the right campsite. Hope they get the roads redone soon.

Wife and I did our first hammock only camping trip. We went over the Labor Day holiday and the park was sold out. Even at capacity there was enough room to spread out a bit. The sites are large and accommodating over in the Walnut Ridge Unit. WR is primarily RV with 50A hook ups and potable water. Hen House Unit is more of the tent only area. We chose the Walnut Ridge Unit because it was available and more wooded.
Honor system for fire wood, I thought that was interesting. I'm sure they don't actually get all the money they should but still, a good supply of firewood available without having to go into a station.
Heavy park ranger presence which is nice. They'd stop and chat from time to time but never seemed intrusive.
Great hiking trails, but really the Cypress lake is the real draw. Absolutely tailor made for kayaking and canoeing.

We were looking for something not too far from Houston and decided to try this park. We were not disappointed. There are two sides to the park, divided by the highway - Hen House Ridge and Walnut Ridge. We stayed on the Walnut Ridge side. The sites are further apart and there seems to be more shade on that side. Henhouse sites are also closer together that Walnut Ridge. The first night (Thursday) there were only a couple other campers there, and they were at opposite ends with us in the middle. We practically had the place to ourselves. Friday, however, we found ourselves with campers on both sides. BTW, it appears they took several of the inside (away from the water) sites out of service and turned them into excess vehicle parking. That also gave more privacy to our site. And is was from one of these excess vehicle sites, which back up to the forest, that a couple of deer would grace us with their presence in the mornings and evenings.
The Walnut Ridge side cost more than the Henhouse Ridge (50A vs 30A vs Tent site), which may explain why there were more people on the Henhouse side. The bathrooms were very clean. Our site was level and shaded. While we could hear some traffic noise from our site, it was not enough to be bothersome. The only complaint I have is the dumpsters are not located near the campsites. We had to drive in order to dump our trash.

This is an absolutely beautiful park, with nice sites with great views and space around them. If you're able to get a waterfront spot, it's likely you can launch a kayak or boat right from your site.
The park is a bit confusing upon arrival however, which is our biggest ding. There are two campgrounds - which are on opposite sides of Highway 190. You check in at headquarters (the Hen House Ridge side) for both loops. However, there is no where to really park your RV while you wait in line to check in creating a bit of chaos in the parking lot. There's also no easy turn around once you're checked in to get over to Walnut Ridge, if that's where your site is (as was ours). You end up needing to navigate through the somewhat tight campground loops in Hen House Ridge to get turned around and head back across the street.
Most any waterfront site at Walnut Ridge is fabulous, and most the interior ones are pretty ok. On the Hen House side, site 1-22 felt somewhat packed in - but we would have been quite happy in many of the sites across the sough in the 80-95 range. It's kinda a gamble as to which side to reserve in advance for upping your odds of getting a 'good' site.
Once you're parked in your site - it's a peaceful and relaxing place. We were there during Spring Bring, so the campground was busier than usual. On our first morning, was asked to moved to a more secluded feeling waterfront site (108 - thanks for the tip, Watsons!), which kept us nicely isolated from the extra activity.
Unfortunately due to flooding in the area - most of the hiking trails were closed. But we did enjoy the kayaking trails, which are quite lovely.
All and all, we'd return to this park. It's a great stop in East Texas.

We stayed here to visit the nearish by Columbia Space Shuttle museum - in Hemphill an area of Texas where much of the Shuttle debris came down. We'd been in Houston for a few days and were so happy to find this peaceful, beautiful spot to camp on our way east. We came in after dark, and didn't see the late check in instructions and maps which are on the left wall facing the park office in the Hen Ridge unit. So the gates do close at 10, and there are many tent sites so it was tricky t find the Rv sites w/o a map. Just saying,,get there before and grab a map. Bathroom showers were great.
We rented a canoe for a couple of hours- which was plenty of time. I biked the Slough trail, which was fun. They had programs (eg star party and snake feeding) and alligators were just starting to come out according to staff. You could purchase campfire wood for 5 bucks. Jasper has all the services u need, about 10 miles away. We bought shrimp from a guy selling it in a gas station parking lot. Delicious!
Our AT&T only showed one or two bars most of the time, nonetheless that was enough for surfing even some streaming. We were there in early March and there were indeed mosquitos.

“Not for big rigs”
noted 11/7/2022
Didn't stay here because we could not get in. Good thing. The sites said we would fit but we drove thru when staying nearby and I would not go unless you have something under 25-30 feet or tent. Very tight in the hen house area, a bit better across the street, but roads still extremely narrow and curvy around trees. Just wanted to post for other bigger rigs considering this spot. You may want to go to Sandy Creek down the road - it is an ACoE spot and well suited to big rigs.
