I stopped over for the night on a trip from Fl to NM. I was looking for an easy quiet place to camp for the night - this was just right!
Check-in was simple and fast, the area was quiet, and my site was private and flat.
Picnic table and fire pit provided.
Bathrooms were incredibly clean.

Most people seem to be doing this at their own sites (as opposed to unhitching and parking next to their trailers). Each site had a picnic table, tent pad, fire pit, and lantern hook. Fairly level left to right and only slight leveling needed front to back. Plenty of shade as we were in the "piney woods" of east Texas. Large trees surround each site. If you wanted to use the public restroom and shower, it was a 3 minute walk down the road and kept very clean. Great hiking and biking trails. I would have given this place 5 stars, but the dump station was out of order for a couple of days, so we ended up having to go to a Flying J to dump. Most sites are fairly close together, but it seems like they were trying to put empty spots between campers. Was able to use both Verizon and ATT with no problems.

As a Texan, I'm embarrassed that three years after flooding from hurricane Harvey damaged large areas of this park my state has done so little to restore it to full use. Aside from barricades blocking off day use, camping and hiking areas, there is no evidence of any restoration work. Worse, the TPWD website says nothing about the damage and closings. Visitors should be advised that all areas NE of Sandy Slough are closed. The Village Slough, Water Oak, and Bike Fitness trails ARE open.
Bitching aside, this is a very nice small park in an excellent location, close to the gulf, Big Thicket, and urban Beaumont. Village Creek was flowing nicely when we were there, and would seem to be good for exploring via canoe or kayak. Good RV sites with very good restroom/shower facility close by.
Adjacent to the park road, between Village Slough and Sandy Slough, is an area of 5 acres or so that has been cleared of pine trees and brush, leaving only occasional hardwood trees. Staff informed me that this area is to be used to reintroduce native Longleaf Pine trees to the park at some future date.

Half the park is closed, including all but 1-2 short hiking trails and creek access, which limits the park's utility. Upon arrival, the polarity of our power post was reversed and it took a few hours for the park staff to fix it. Sites are very close together and narrow, though ours was level. Construction and road noise are both audible.
The park may recover in a year or two since repairs are ongoing, but currently I'd skip a visit. We only stayed here to access Big Thicket National Preserve, which doesn't have RV camp spots.

This is a tough park to review. Due to extensive damage from Hurricane Harvey, the only part of the park that is open is the elec/h2o camping loop. No trail access. No creek access. No playground. No nada! They communicated this very clearly before we made our reservations so it’s not like we were disappointed, it’s just tough to review. They had barricades up saying that violators will be prosecuted and given up to a $500 fine. I would imagine that this time last year it would’ve been a beautiful place to go.
The sites themselves were a little bit tight. It’s very heavily wooded so you do get a lot of shade and privacy, but there’s just not a lot of room to set up chairs or that kind of thing. We thought the dump station was a little too close to the camping area. I can’t remember exactly which one it is, but one of the spots cannot be more than 20 yards from where you dump your tanks. The bathhouse was in really nice shape. They have two large showers with plenty of hot water, and hooks to hang your things.
This park is basically in Lumberton, Tx. It’s a relatively small town so it’s not like you have noise or light pollution, but at the same time, you can go grab Whataburger or H-E-B and it’s no more than 10 minutes from the park. Anything you aren’t able to find in Lumberton, you can surely find in Beaumont, 15 minutes down the road. What we enjoyed most was the proximity to the Big Thicket National Preserve. We went and hiked several trails in the area. Our five-year-old was blown away by the Pitcher Plant Trail. Make sure to visit the awesome visitor center in Kountze, as well. Also, it’s only about 45 minutes to an hour down to the coast. We took a day trip to Sea Rim State Park (free of charge with my Texas State Parks Pass!) and had a blast splashing around in the waves.
All in all, I’m excited to go back and give this place another shot, once repairs are made and the rest of the park is open.

We did a quick overnight stop here on January 24, 2018. Great little Texas State Park. Unfortunately when we stayed funding hadn't been received yet to start repairs from Hurricane Harvey(August 2017) and all hiking trails and amenities were closed. The staff was pretty friendly except when I disregarded the stop sign at the office after returning from a trip to town and was issued a stern warning by a park ranger. In my defense, I thought it was only for new arrivals needing to check in. Make sure you come to a complete stop! The sites were quiet and spacious some had a second tier where the picnic table and fire pit were. There is a free dump station for campers. Very close to town for any necessities. There is a pretty big hump going over railroad tracks on the way in if you have a low riding rig take it slow.

Reconstruction after Hurricane Harvey is not slated to begin until the end of March so for now, only one campground loop is open (day use area closed) Each site had a grill pit, picnic table, benches, and a tent pad. Restrooms were clean (and had two showers). A little buggy due to all of the rain. Nearby train was loud but didn’t hear it in the middle of the night. Difficult to tell what it will be like when fully restored but for now, was sufficient for a one night stay before moving on.
