The road out is pretty rough for sure but if you're coming to this specific location it's worth it there are plenty of other locations along the road

We needed a base camp to do some canyoneering on Cedar Mesa and see the other sites in the area with a big rig. This fit the bill very nicely. In our humble opinion this site 3.7 miles in from the east side entrance is the best thing the valley has to offer for a group of 1-6 vehicles, rig or tent size depending. This location provides lovely valley views of Sitting Hen and Rooster Buttes to the south, Battleship and Castle Buttes to the west and northwest and even far away Monument Valley.
When we scouted it out the biggest concern about the road in was some high crowns that might scrape the bottoms of the basement doors on the rig, especially at the top of the first hill. I drove them with as much of an angle as the width of the road permitted and had no problem. The caveat to all this is the lack of moisture that would create mud and there are ample signs what a different situation it would be if muddy.
There is a large pull off area on the side of hwy. 163 about 2 mi. east of the east entrance to Valley of the Gods that we used to disconnect the toad to scout. There is actually room on both sides of the highway but the south side is much bigger and more level. There is a much smaller spot on the north side of the highway very close to the entrance but turning around with the bigger rig would be dicey.
We shared the east end of the valley with other big rigs including large 5th wheels and a class A coach with a tandem axle that parked it on top of the first pullout in.

After reading the reviews for big rigs, we have a 42' Solitude, I thought we got this! Yikes! Here's what I can add...the east entrance is your only option for finding a big rig spot. The road in is basically one lane and the switchbacks and steep hills makes visibility an issue. Take it slow, as others have said, and 4 wheel drive is a must! The big rig sites are within the first 2 miles. After that there will be issues turning around and I wouldn't recommend pulling your rig any further. Don't expect consistent cell service. ATT and Verizon were on again, off again. Weekend was the worse. Now, with all that...The solitude, incredible vistas, sunsets, and night skies are totally worth it!!!

We are in a large rig and made it safely about 1.5 miles in from the East entrance. There is a creek (hard panned) to cross, up a few steep grades and some tight turns but made it with flying colors. Just take your time and you'll do fine.
We eventually camped, for a few days, just before the "Setting Hen Butte" on the curve to the left. It was one of the few places we found in this stretch large enough for us. There are a ton of smaller spaces, which is ok, everyone deserves a spot, but for us this spot served us well. We had a wonderful view of the Valley below and many of the noted Monument Rocks in the distant.
FYI, if you're in a large rig, 36' or larger, it would be wise to have a good truck with 4WD to help get up a few of the inclines and help on the way out, which is pretty steep as well. Jus' sayin'!
Water can be obtained in Mexican Hat at the Exxon/7-11 store for a nominal fee. Dump is at one of the RV Parks in the area, if need.
Also, Thanks to all that replied to my Question about big rigs getting in... it was of great help and made it safely! Hats off to everyone!

This is prime boondocking in beautiful country. We entered from the Mexican Hat end of the loop towing our 28’ Airstream, and had no issues getting through the shallow wet wash and into one of the first large sites, named ‘Seven Sailors’ for the rock formation. There is a bit of traffic, as this spot is a popular photo op., but the evenings and nights are dark and quiet. There are many more great sites within the first five miles, then the road becomes rougher and better done by truck campers. Water jugs can be filled at the Exxon / 7 Eleven in Mexican Hat, and the nearest septic dump opportunity is at Cadillac Ranch in Bluff.

This is a great spot to boondock of you want to enjoy the area. Plenty of sites and they even have porta potties every so often that are kept clean. Only down side is it is really popular and you will be close to other campers.

We loved our time boondocking in the Valley of the gods. You can come in from the west or east. The road on either end is fine but gets real rough in the middle. If you’re towing a trailer look for sites toward the ends. I wouldn’t recommend towing a trailer through the middle portion.
