At White Sands visitor center they said might be due to pollution.

"Perfect stay during balloon fiesta."
We stayed 5 nights during the time of the balloon fiesta. No hookups, so come prepaired. The parking lot is big, so plenty of space. The Fiesta is half a hours drive away (north).
