I could not find a lot of campgrounds around the Sandpoint area, so Sam Owens was a gem to stay and visit friends who lived close by. They have several loops, all with lots of shade.
We intended to go to Upper View, but it was crowded and I thought the road was too much to travel up. We found a spot between two other campers and had a great time.
This used to be our favorite place to camp. It has become too popular and now is not as enjoyable as it used to be. They were also doing construction, which closed down one loop, which only made the problem worse.
We stayed a week here in June of 2018. The location makes the park. Go into Hungry Horse and get your firewood. $6 for a small bunch is too much. The motel on the left as you enter town sells various sizes a lot cheaper.
