"Invasive flies"

Bugs are bad at numerous desert locations, but I've never experiences flies as bad as here. If you just think about opening the door 40 flies magically appear inside. If you're looking to hone your fly swatting skills this is the place.

"Pretty, but..."

Pretty, but the highway noise is relentless. It's a natural amphitheater for the sound. And it seems they haven't provided water for over a year, which is silly because if there's a drought here there's also a drought anywhere else local that... Read more

"Windy"

Stopped by but didn't stay. Long distance views but what comes with that is wind. It wasn't even supposed to be a particularly windy day but it was gusting fiercely. No thanks, not for me. The road was well graded and Verizon signal strong... Read more

"She's like the wind"

Still giving it 4 stars, but had to leave early due to marauding hordes of potentially plague infected chipmunks (yeah, that plague, and it's 2021 so of course). I was willing to put up with their nonsense even after they uprooted my basil and... Read more

"Manzanitas!"

Never been somewhere manzanitas grow that I didn't love. This is no exception. Ponderosa pines, some scattered scrub oaks, and plenty of other flora. Birds, squirrels, lizards of course, and saw my first scorpion. Access to the first roughly... Read more

"Use these coordinates instead 34.639127, -117.157034"

The coordinates provided take you five miles further down a miserable road than necessary. I came in at night and didn't want to risk setting up in the wrong location, or getting stuck, so I followed all the way. Big mistake. The road is a... Read more

"Yes it's open, yes you can get cell service"

As of April 2021 the BLM website says this campground is closed. Not true. It's patrolled relatively infrequently, but they're aware people are using the site and not kicking anyone out. The pit toilets are not being maintained. My boosted... Read more

"Unimpressive, except for the ferocity of the wind"

It was nice to see snow capped mountains, but five minutes later you realize you're in a wind tunnel of a valley surrounded by mostly dead vegetation (even for a desert, it's been very dry). All vehicle parking is restricted to with 50 feet of... Read more

"The near total lack of cell coverage forces you to appreciate the beauty of nature"

This location is absolutely beautiful. Rough boulders everywhere combined with sandy soil creates natural walking paths to explore. Last year's fires torched most of the plants in the area, but luckily the road served as a barrier, and the... Read more

"Valley of Fire Purgatory"

There's a second camping area another 5.5 miles beyond the coordinates provided, right before the entrance to the park. If you're wondering if the Valley of Fire's unique red rock formations extend beyond the park boundaries, they don't, but it's... Read more
