“Camping in the Wild West, don't expect any peace or quiet”

This is a beautiful location with a few great trails. It's unfortunately known to locals as a party spot. I stayed there from Thursday to Sunday. I set up camp in the area directly east of the beach. A group of folks rolled in an hour or two later and immediately started blasting loud music. The group grew later into the evening and got progressively louder. I have a fan in my van that usually drowns out external noise, but I could hear them well into the early morning hours. Not a single person from that group made eye contact, gave a friendly wave, or a head nod. They made it clear we weren't welcome in their area. Between the noise, offputting interactions, and the group growing the following morning, I decided to find a different spot. Many others not part of that group moved as well. There's fortunately plenty of room to spread out in the area, and I'd recommend going further north on Usal Road, away from the beach.

While I didn't experience anything more than drunken partying, loud music, and chainsaws—heed the warnings and experiences of others in the Google reviews. Also confirmed with others I met who've stayed there before—guns, fireworks, and late-night racing are common. There are several memorials in the area reminding folks how deadly some of the shenanigans are.

The area is generally disrespected and full of trash. Not the worst I've seen (I'm looking at you Arizona), but it's on par with some party areas commonly found on BLM land. There's a burn area on the way in caused by fireworks. The fire came very close to the Candelabra Trees (which are definitely worth the short hike to see).

There were quite a few people camping on the beach and tracks throughout. Beach camping is technically not allowed because the stream leading to the ocean is being rehabilitated for salmon spawning. There's far too little funding and few park rangers to enforce this though.

The drive in and out on Usal Road (southern portion) is double-track with several pull-offs for passing. It's rutted, and there are a few sections of large holes you have to pick lines around. High clearance 4x4 will have no problem. I drove it slowly with my 2wd (fwd) van with more off-road-oriented tires. I slipped a few times on the inclines and had to choose different lines, but it wasn't unreasonable. I saw a couple of regular sedans, but I can't imagine they made it up and down unscathed. I wouldn't recommend anything larger than a high-roof Sprinter. Trailers wouldn't be a good idea.

I had about 2 bars of extended LTE on the north end of the beach with Verizon. Enough for texts and calls, not enough for Internet. AT&T had similar service.

Really enjoyed our brief stay here. Enjoyable drive through winding mountain road with mossy forests and old growth trees- you could do this in a standard car (we saw one honda fit at the campsite) but the other dozen vehicles were trucks and jeeps. and the honda came in with a truck so dont know if the truck was scouting or willing to pull him up a hill if it got tricky. trucks and jeeps make more sense, especially on a day like when we did it (rainy day in mid november). there is some rutting, slick mud on steep grades, deep wide puddles a foot deep, and i could see getting boxed out in a 2wd car in these conditions. I had read that the beach is ok for driving, and clearly the beach itself has car and dirtbike tracks all over it. there were a couple trucks camping on the beach itself above the high tide line. however on the way out i noticed a sign at the info area that said no driving on the beach. buyer beware. The ocean noise drowns out all possible camper noise if you are near the beach, and there are apparently a dozen or more clearings in the woods inland of the beach camping, which look pretty wet in the rain. i got one or two bars verizon/extended 1X cell service right by the water, but no service elsewhere. on that note, i highly recommend you have directions or a gps coordinate for the turnoff on route 1 to get here. the deep forest where the basically unlabeled road leaves highway 1 would be easy to miss, and you wont have cell phone service to figure out where you are anywhere near that turnoff.,
