Upper Kents Lake Dispersed Camping

It was so refreshing to find a place to escape in Utah that wasn't desert! It's a bit of a rough road getting up to the lake, but we were able to find a spot right by the water and didn't have any close neighbors. It was beautiful and peaceful. There was, however, some loud logging (?) work being done throughout the morning on Sunday so that is something to be mindful of. Also not really any cell service so shouldn't count on that!

Lots of ants, spiders, flys & Mosquitoes and dragon flys. But don’t let that scare you off. The views are amazing! Sites were clean but very dusty. We saw some deer and several butterflies. There will be dust and noise from ATVs even though it’s a quiet zone. The road is unpaved washboard and dirt a lot of bumps. So... go slow and enjoy the ride.

We arrived on a Tuesday & found this spot with ease. Really nice view as you drive in then we had 5 miles of dirt road - smooth and easy to pass in my vw Passat. Our space was large and secluded. We had a nice view of the water, saw lots of deer, geese, and squirrels. We attempted fishing but didn’t catch anything nor did we see any signs of fish. It is bear country so be cautious of your belongings and food. By Thursday, the whole area was getting pretty busy so I imagine finding a spot on the weekend would be difficult.

We got to the site pretty late in the evening with just enough light to set up and start dinner. Immediately upon pulling in, we came across 3 deer. The site is beautiful and right across from Upper Kent Lake. Our dogs loved it too! Lots of space to roam and walk around. The next morning we were greeted by turkeys and deer again! Love this site!

We stayed in the Kent’s lake campground 1/4th mile from out final location at Upper Kent’s lake the first night. Drove in on a Tuesday afternoon and there were several first come first serve spots available. Found that spots located away from the lake can be reserved, those closer to the lake are not. We picked site 14 for our over night and it cost $7 due to military discount with the National park card. Normal fee is $14. Water spickets near nearly every site for drinking water or cooking. Camp ground is well taken care of, the camp host is a gruff older gentleman but good at his job as camp host.

We moved the next day to Upper Kent’s lake since we enjoy the boondocking a bit more and there are less people around. We found a place we could get into decently right up against the lake. Beautiful views. Only set back is it’s right next to the road and there seems to be a decent amount of traffic.

Our RV is a 37’ class A. And we wondered why we were getting so many looks as we drove up the 4 Miles from 157. We realized afterwards that we were a bit large for the roads, what with the switch backs and hair pin corners.

We would go again and encourage others to go as well just be sure to be cautious for any oncoming traffic on the dirt road because there is really very little room to move.

This was our second time staying in Fishlake forest, previously we stayed at Little Cottonwood. We found that with our travel trailer, we prefer boondocking over designated campsites. The previous reviewer for upper kents lake sold us with the pics and mostly good review. We loved the spot and had the lake mostly to ourselves. The weather was beautiful though a little chilly at night as expected. Cell reception with Verizon was just enough to squeak a few phone calls and texts with spotty coverage and no internet. We explored a bit and hiked a bit more. We saw several deer, several beaver and a ton of cows roaming around. Plenty of cow pies just about everywhere we went. We didnt' experience the noise issues described by the previous reviewer though there were some dirt bikes and quads on designated trails.

This is a camping area by a small lake ( Upper Kents ) about 1 mile South of Kents lake. There are numerous dispersed sites located on the east side of FR 137.

Facilities - None ( A pit toilet is located at Kents Lake fishing access about 1 mile North of this dispersed area.

Access - Very easy access along FR 137.

Location - About 3 miles along a dirt road ( FR 137) from Rt. 153. and 13 miles from Beaver. Very nice Mt. area. There are black bears in the area - so protect you food properly.

Cleanliness. - As clean as you, and the people that stayed there prior to you, keep it. There was some trash there that I picked up. Pack out twice as much as you pack in.

Quality - just open areas off the Forest Road. But these are open areas in some very beautiful and remote country.

Noise - There are signs warning off 4-wheelers. But there is no enforcement and it is noisy on weekends.

Fishing - Upper Kents has trout. It was very good fishing when I was there in the late spring but some locals told me the fishing declines later in the summer as the water warms in the shallow lake.

No cell service.
