Tuttle Creek Campground

This is a basic and relatively clean campground. During the late fall and winter months there is no water and no dump, so you are essentially paying for just the spot. Some of the spots are a bit uneven, but with a little work you can level your camper/vehicle. The campground feels remote enough to enjoy nature with easy access to the town of Lone Pine for fuel/supplies/restaurants.

There are two loops at the campground. The best site is 53 - it's at the very tip of the second loop, large site with wonderful views and lots of privacy. However, our site (12) and most of the sites on the left side (4,6,8,9,10,11,12,14,16,17,18) in the first loop back up to a small creek that is nice to hear. In loop two the campsites that back up to the creek are 29,30,32,33, 35 ,37 (see https://www.summitpost.org/campground-map/892463). Likely the creek disappears in summer.

At the back of loop two, there is a trail that leads up into the mountains. It's a nice strenuous hike.

This is a great campground at the base of the mountains. Its spots are nicely separated so you get your individual experience, and it’s a relatively undeveloped campground so you also get more of a boondocking feel. The spots that are more level are along the creek itself, but the spots on the loops are the best views. I stayed 2 days in spot #26 on the main loop and was able to use my leveling blocks just fine. For cell service I got 3 bars with Verizon on my cell phone and 3 bars with my T-Mobile hotspot… When I connected my WeBoost, they both pulled 4 bars LTE with fully streaming data. During the winter there is no water or dump station, and the fee is $10/night. Since Alabama Hills no longer has dispersed camping, this is a great alternate. WARNING: While Whitney Portal road is closed you have to be careful which road in you use. If you have a trailer DO NOT come in on Tuttle Creek Road from Whitney Portal as the road is 1 lane and very tricky with steep drops and tight curves with oncoming cars on a 1 lane road. For those towing, use Lubken Canyon Road. It’s still a little tricky as it narrows to 1 lane but it is far less of an issue!

This is a nice campground with beautiful views and a friendly campground host. As seniors, we paid $5 a night. Other campers paid $10. During the winter months it is dry camping, so be prepared with water and a source of electricity, if desired. We called ahead of time and were informed that the water and dump station at the campground are seasonal and had been turned off on October 31. We were there in early November. We filled our water tank at the nearby Boulder Creek RV Resort for $10 before driving to Tuttle Creek. Unfortunately, Boulder Creek does not have a public dump station. As mentioned in other reviews, the main road into the Tuttle Creek campground--Whitney Portal Road--was badly damaged by a recent storm. We think it will be out of commission for at least a couple of years (as I write in November of 2023) because the damage was extensive. There are two alternate roads in and out of the campground, and neither is ideal. We chose to use Lubken Canyon Road, which includes a one lane section with very little shoulder for about a mile. That section of road is a straight shot, so you can see ahead and be alert for approaching vehicles. We were worried that we would meet someone towing a trailer who couldn't back up, so we left really early in the morning and got out without a problem.

We arrived on Monday the 6th of November 2023, only to find that the Whitney Portal Road is closed due to significant storm damage and there is no scheduled reopening date. (expected opening is sometime in 2024) However, there are 2 different detours available.
1. The Whitney Portal detour from Lone Pine is approximately 5.2 miles to Tuttle Creek Campground; the road is very narrow, sharp blind curves, and some one lane areas. Trailers are not recommended per signage, but you can make it with due caution and slow speeds. Follow detour signs.
2. The 2nd option is south of town about 4-5 miles. It is the Lubken Canyon Road detour off 395. It too is 5.2 miles to Tuttle Creek Campground. Trailers not recommended by signage. There is a long section of single lane road with no shoulders. It is a safer alternative for trailer towing, with less blind curves.

First time to visit Tuttle Creek, have to say we are overwhelmed by the 360 degree views from our campsite.
Arrived on a Thursday and found many open site top accommodate our 26' TT, by Friday evening it was 99% full.
The Whitney Portal Rd coming in from Lone Pine is closed, expect to use the detour signs to get in. $ 10 per day fee $ 5 if using senior discount. Mind to unpainted speed bump after turning onto the campground road they sneak up on you.
At the writing of this review the water and dump station is still open.
We would stay here again anytime in the area.

Beautiful campground, our site was right on the creek with wonderful views, well spaced sites. But this place has SO MANY MOTHS! We have a travel trailer and we’re so careful about open and closing our door and they were still getting in somehow… I am not sure if they were crawling in through the slide of what… but don’t say I didn’t warn ya!

This campground has spectacular views! We had a wonderful spot right on the creek (which is raging right now because of the snow melt), but honestly there is no bad spot in this entire campground. There are only maybe 3 sites with a little bit of shade of the whole 80+ sites, so bring some sort of coverage. The spots are nicely spaced out, there is water and a dump station. We will absolutely be back here! All first come first served, $10/night which is a great deal!

The spots are great, not all are level. So bring some leveling blocks. Bathrooms are clean( pit/vault). The dump and fresh water was available for my few days here. In the past this has been spotty. Host was super nice. Close to Alabama Hills, Whitney, lone Pine and Manzanar. Verizon 2 bars LTE, but with booster I was getting 4 bars and could use my phone as a hotspot.
