“Closed. But....”

We arrived on March 31st and the gate was closed & locked. We have a 40 ft motorhome towing a 24 ft enclosed trailer. It's no easy task to make it to this campground at our size! But we made it down there only to find out it was closed. We got out & walked up the road just a bit to see if we could find a place to turn around.
We found a spot that we could actually boondock just around the corner from the campground entrance. Next to the river. Very peaceful there. Cool to see the barges go by so close (rarely honked, didn't bother us).
Only down side was there was a lot of cars in & out down on the other end. Many only seemed to stay for about 15 minutes. Seemed odd. But no one bothered us.

“Small, quiet”

The access is a narrow paved road with several extremely steep blind hills.
We actually camped in one of the large boondocking areas just to the left before entering the campground. It was a two minute walk to the well stocked vault toilet that was cleaned once a week. There were only 4 or 5 improved sites in the campground, but it looked like people boondock around there as well. Sites in the campground were partially shaded, had tables and fire rings and most had a view of the Ohio River. (We saw a lot of fish activity in the river.). We did not find any potable water and there were no trash receptacles. There were several signs stating there would be a fee increase to $5 in 2020. We also met a regular camper who stated the Forest Service was planning to do some updates and clearing more areas. The current improved sites would only accommodate small trailers or RV’s...up to 25’, but the boondocking areas could handle big rigs, however, the ground is sandy, so one would need to exercise caution getting off in the dirt. We picked up quite a lot of garbage especially along the river.
We enjoyed the occasional barges coming by during the day, but they got
old at night. We had a decent Verizon signal and enough speed to search internet. My husband could stream YouTube most of the time.
There were a few noisy nights of generators and large groups in the main campground but over all a very pleasant stay. Enough to keep us there 10 days instead of 5!
JoyFull Coyote would stay here again
