When we first pulled in we went straight. The first site in your right is the best spot for big rigs or groups. There are two more defined spots down the road then the roads start to branch off. Just be AWARE that the further you go back the rougher it gets. I would not suggest a fire here even if allowed. It is very dry and dust, but ... more

We stopped here for an overnight stay on our way to CA, it was dark and there are no markings anywhere so its hard to tell where to park. There appear to be a couple of spots that you can park in but they are not level and there are rocks everywhere. Ended up getting a flat tire on our RV while trying to turn around, managed to get it parked and leveled and stayed the night. The view in the morning is amazing with the mountains surrounding the area but the site is not what I would call a camping site unless you are in a tent.

You don’t need 4WD, but you do need something with decent clearance. Take it slow and you will be fine. Sites are small. We fit very well in our 27’ Class C, but larger than that might be tight. Leveling was a challenge, but the view was worth it. It’s probably best suited to truck campers and that sort of thing. I’m waking up to the sun rising over Mt Shasta and I’m certainly not mad about it.

Road in is not passable without 4WD. The few spots early on (got there, with difficulty in my van) were totally trashed. Broken Glass, TV's dumped, burned out vehicles. Coud hear gunshots nearby. Totally ugly spot. Could be nicer farther back if you have 4WD.
Didn't stay.

Rough dispersed camping spot. The roads were rough and sandy in spots, needed to use our 4 wheel drive. The view of Mount Shasta was beautiful. Unfortunately, previous users left trash making the closer and easier to get to spots less appealing. There had obviously been a wildfire through the area, but bushes and plants were making a comeback. We ended up parking on a knoll that was close to a RR track, but not extremely busy, 3 trains, all through by midnight. Very quiet otherwise.

However, it’s only 5-7 miles from Weed. It’s a burnt area, so be careful. Road is passable for most vehicles. Snakes and scorpions, yes. But, you can stay there for long periods of time. It’s a shooting area so there are shooters periodically.

This location is gorgeous for small off road vehicles but definitely NOT suitable for large setups. The roads are narrow and rocky with shrubs eager to scratch your truck and trailer.
We are very grateful that the KOA was close enough to be towed to and the gentleman at Black Butte Towing were the best.
Aside from the issues we ran into due to our size, the natural beauty was captivating and the cell service was great.

It was very rocky & bumpy—wouldn’t recommend for larger vehicles, without all terrain tires, and for wide vehicles. Our van sides got scratched up a bit, but we were able to find more secluded spots. It was unfortunate to see the waste left behind by other humans. We even saw the dismembered corpse of a nonhuman animals. Very disturbing going to these places to connect with nature and to see it being destroyed.

Access to this site can be difficult for larger rigs, but those who can fit will be rewarded with a special piece of the forest. This area is a nice, flat landing with partial to full sun. We had no issues staying charged via solar, despite having partial shade at certain parts of the day. We had both AT&T and Verizon, although Verizon was on the slower side.
There’s room for at least 3-4 small rigs in this little area, with plenty of space in between.
You won’t see much by way of traffic here, because the National Forest road continues and goes up a steep hill. We did see a couple folks drive in, but didn’t stay long. Only one set of older folks hiking. Otherwise it was very peaceful.
Dump and water are at the Pilot down in the town of Weed, 15 minutes away. Groceries can be found at the local grocery store, and there’s a Glacier water refill right out front for drinking water.
The area is rich in geographic history due to Mount Shasta (8 miles away) being a (now dormant) volcano. Along with the views of Mount Shasta, you can also see the tops of old lava flows (one mile away). Be sure to check out Plutos Cave down 97 North of here. It’s a really cool lava tube that’s free to explore. Also, there’s a kinda freaky tree circle if you walk down the main forest road (towards the SouthEast).
