Large camp. One loop is first come first serve. We arrived on Sunday afternoon in late September and many sites were available.
Minor hwy noise at night, and some skydiving aircraft noise in the morning.
Easy access to the Natl Park.

This campground is a real gem in terms of beauty and close proximity to the south rim of the Grand Canyon, just 2 miles south of Tusayan and 4 miles from the NP entrance. It is approximately 10 miles from the actual south rim area.
There are clean pit toilets, no showers or dump station. There is fresh water near the entrance where you can obtain daily water needs however filling of RV tanks is prohibited. Currently the campground relies on trucked in water so that explains the policy.
We arrived on Wednesday night before the Labor Day weekend. Our loop [Black Bear] and the campground in general was mostly empty. By the weekend there were many more campers, mostly tent campers, but still plenty of sites available. Posted generator hours are from 7am until 9pm.
We did not see but could hear elk bugling at night.
The camp hosts were great and told us the yellowjacket infestation was very bad and not seen before this summer. It eased up around mid August but for awhile it was so bad that people had to leave.
We saw yellowjackets but not awful, however we did not cook outside which surely would have attracted them.
This is a beautiful National Forrest campground! We camped in a 32' trailer, able to fit into a back in site but a pull through would be better for RV's over 30'. We stopped at the free dump station withing Grand Canyon National Park located at Mather campground.
We would fill our 30 gallon bladder with fresh water and dump our portable waste water tanks which we hauled in the bed of our pickup truck. I am so glad we have a macerator pump and spare fresh water pump that came in so handy in this situation.
This campground has a high percentage of tent campers visiting from foreign countries according to the campground hosts and our own observations. There were very few RV's camping.
The new group sites are first class and are lighted.
The camp hosts report that the two new loops are supposed to be paved in the future.
Note nightly fee of $10 reflects my senior National Park lifetime pass benefit.

Starting 14 May 22 sites are reservable through Recreation.gov. They were first come first served when we were here. Very nice campground with paved roads and camp sites, sites had been maintained and raked, very clean. Host was very friendly. Some sites are tent only and others are back-in or pull through; most sites will accommodate RV’s up to 30 feet (ours is 24 feet) easily while I saw many pull throughs that could easily accommodate class A motorhomes of all lengths. All sites have a fire ring, picnic table and bar-b-que. Pit toilets are available throughout the campground. It looks like water will be available at points throughout the campground sometime in the near future, large storage tanks were being installed while we were here. Extensive upgrading and about 100 new sites will be available by the end of May 22 per the contractor and camp host. There are multiple interconnected “loops” and it is easy to get disoriented without a map, none were available when we were here. Most sites are shaded which hinders solar if that is the way you recharge your batteries, I did see some sites (#39) that got plenty of sun. We would stay here again.

We stayed at Bear loop tent camping with a dog. New and lots of fire wood on the ground still. Was there starting July 30. There was a yellow jacket warning at that time and for a few days they were fierce. But the FS put out traps and that helped a lot. Also we adapted to their needs. They were frantic for water as no rain for a while. So we put out some in a shallow dish about 10’ away from the table. Worked well. A lot of people canceled so the loop was very quiet. Was rainy and thunderstorms. What we wanted as I live in Quartzsite and was escaping the heat. I’m going back for a week or so soon. The Wild life we saw up close were ravens, yellow jackets and elk. We had a great time.

Great proximity to GCNP. Being a very short drive from Tusayan we used the shuttle system to get in and move around the park. This campsite is in the process of being spruced up. It looks really nice. Campsites are private and spacious. Only vault toilets available with no shower house. Only water I could find was by the dumpsters near the entrance. However, they were swarming with yellow jackets and therefore unusable. I heard more than a few screams from what I assume to be stings. The yellow jackets were everywhere which made the toilets mostly unusable as well. Really made it dangerous to be outside during the day. Only 3G or LTE service.

Most of them are very big and easily handle a 35+ Rig. The spots are very spread out. The park is also very well maintained and has many hiking trails that link up to the Kaibab National Forest. The town of Tusayan is about 5-10min away but you feel very secluded. We picked up water and filled our tanks for free outside of Flagstaff at a Pilot gas station. We would recommend doing that since you could be charged $10 for 15 gallons at the local RV park or $3 a gallon at some of the gas stations. You can get water here but it is limited. We will be staying here again!

It appears that late May is a fabulous time to visit the area. Daytime temps were in the 70s and down to freezing at night. The campground is under renovation and development right now, so perhaps it will change the experience, but even though it was full it was incredibly quiet. Our site (16) was private and huge. Oddly, the picnic tables were on the wrong side of the driveway, however this did not bother us since we bring our own camp tables. The driveway, though incredibly long, was sort of torqued so it took some real effort to find a spot where we could get the trailer level. In the end, we we partially off the driveway to make that happen. We had a visit from an elk one morning, which was incredibly special. The campground was full, or near to it, but we had very little noise. It's dry camping, so an occasional generator was running, but we are solar and MANY of the sites were taken up by tent campers. The campground is only about 20 min away from the Grand Canyon, so we spent a couple of days exploring there. And there are quite a few geocaches in the national forest outside of the Park, if you are into that. We will be back, though we are a bit nervous that all the "improvements" will take away from the private, peaceful ambiance. We'll see. The price is what we paid per night with our senior pass.
