BLM & National Forest free dispersed camping right off Hwy 20. The first half mile of road is BLM land with a couple of site options that can fit RV and/or horse trailers (14 day limit). There is a trailhead parking lot where we noticed some tent campers staying there (from here on you're in USFS - 16 day limit). Drive just further to the end of the road next to the creek and there are a couple sites that can fit any size RV. They provide bear cans for food storage if needed. Be sure to bring bear spray - we hiked the Targhee Creek Trail and found claw marks on the trees, saw wild mountain goats, and a moose with her calf. We were met by the USFS ranger during our 2-week stay and as long as the site was clean, taken care of, and they determined we weren't "living" there but on vacation, we were welcome to stay.
The proximity to Yellowstone was great for us. Island Park is just a few miles south and has a gas station (they have free DVD rentals!) and RV park with propane, water, showers, but no dump. You'll need to go into the state park or national park for dumping. We made our grocery trips to West Yellowstone. Verizon signal was fast and strong.
The turnoff to reach this road is kind of tricky, if driving west from MT/WY, there's no sign to indicate the turnoff, better to watch for it on your GPS. If driving from the south from ID, there's a small sign for Targhee Creek Trail after you round the bend - no turn lanes to help you out so start slowing down at the bend in the highway if you have traffic encroaching behind you.
saraistrippin would stay here again
