“Brook side camping on forest through road”

Not many free camping choices around the Northern entrance to Yellowstone (fishing accesses/rest area across the street from the entrance has posted “no camping” although there is a decent campground a few miles before you get here that only charges $7). About 25 minutes from entrance, last three miles is on decent gravel forest road. Spotty cell reception on the way & none at the site (ATT).

The site is really one large one on the right side of the road with a fire ring & possibly a small one on left side (very muddy when we were here). Apparently DOT is using this as a staging area because we could barely squeeze into the site behind equipment (as shown in photos) late Sep ‘19 although no workers or progress present beyond road signs.

The site was very nicely wooded with glimpses of babbling creek (banks pretty grown up) & no animal prescience although there were a few strange things... see my pics. The trees have eyes. Literally, someone glued plastic eyes onto some of the trees. AND there was a very hefty, short leg bone right next to the campground. Sheep? At least it wasn’t human.... 👀

Anywho, we slept fine our one night here although I may be wary to drive to this one site since it may already be occupied. As well, there was quite a bit more traffic on the forest road than we expected. Maybe 30 cars passed by between 7PM & 11PM?
