When following the directions in Apple Maps, it took us too far. When you see the sign that says “Aldrich Pond Wild Forest State of New York” on a one-lane road to your left, that’s the one you want to take.
You’ll go quite a ways, and then you’ll start to see yellow circles and numbers designating camp sites. There are about 15. The sites are well taken care of and they have an outhouse. No one was camped anywhere along there when we were midweek. But we met a local on the road.
Mosquito are bad. Plan on having a fire to help with that, so make sure you get local wood before you get there.
Past camp 15 there is a barricade by a beautiful lake inlet. Although you can’t drive further, it’s a nice walk. Which leads to a wide cleared “road” with split rail fencing, which leads you to a clearing on the cliffs which is home to a memorial for the Shuler family. We’re glad we took the trek.
This is a nice hideaway spot; but not something I’d use as a “base” for exploring the Adirondack region. Still we loved it. Would have been a nice spot to bring our kayaks to also.
JenW would stay here again
