We arrived a few days after fires started near Watford, North Dakota, the Big Horns in Wyoming and Uinta Mtn in Utah. According to the forest service the last two fires are huge and sending smoke far easterly with the winds.
We stayed here because we wanted to visit the Minuteman Missile Site, we had previously visited the Badlands and Wall.
Winds weren't bad (smoke horrible), but while here we received notice of Stage 2 fire restrictions in the Grasslands. They informed us no charcoal fires and asked us to move our truck within 10' of the official roadway. That's a little insane because we were parked on dirt and not grass, but that would technically mean that any motorhome has to park next to the dusty dirt road. Not sure how or if they will enforce vehicle location issue.
Heads up regarding the road in from Steer Pasture Overlook coordinates. You first drive through grasslands (pasture) and then start climbing slightly while rounding a curve in the road. Around the curve there is a VERY steep, but short climb. I'm surprised I haven't seen anyone comment on it. But so that everyone is aware, that climb maxes out at 19% grade. Our truck, which does off-roading, gives us the specs. Even with our 28' trailer full of 100 gallons water we made the grade. We put it in 4-wheel drive just in case, but not sure how everyone else's rigs handle those situations. Have no idea if the entrance at Nomad View Dispersed camping would be any easier.
But please don’t do want we saw one guy do and drive through the grassland, off-road so he didn’t have to go down the steep hill. If you can’t go down it, then don’t go up! There is posted no driving off road and it’s Stage 2 fire restrictions on top of that. The skies are smoky don’t contribute to another fire!

This is a great place right outside Wall. Several great level spots and other spots more for vans and tens due to the size. Beware that if there is a high wind warning it is WINDY. We were rocking and rolling one night and it was almost impossible to be outside. When the winds are mellow it’s beautiful!

Pros: cell service, free, lots of spots.
Cons: no bathrooms and the winds.
We stayed 2 times and the second time the wind gusts were 28mph and it was not fun. We were in a tiny camper and that was ok but we were not able to be outside at all.
The views are amazing tho and if the winds are not over 20mph this place is awesome.

We arrived around 6pm on a weekend night and had no issues finding a great spot with an amazing view. We saw plenty of other campers come in after that as well, and plenty available spots. It was windy, and overnight definitely heard some big wind gusts. We were in a travel trailer so it wasn’t a big deal. I do wonder how annoying the wind would be for tent campers though? It’s located 5 minutes from the park entrance, so it’s definitely worth camping here!!

This place is just stunning, though beware of the 30mph+ wind. I am in a rooftop tent and couldn’t sleep at all. It sounded as if I was being blown off the cliff. So beware tent campers or any big RVs. This place is really no joke. It’s nearly 2am now and I am praying the wind won’t get worse.
