“Campers Beware”

Caballo Lake State Park is nice but Campers BEWARE. The camphost at Caballo Lake State Park, Stallion area, digs through ALL Caballo Lake SP trash bins EVERY SINGLE DAY. We witnessed this camphost drive his state-issued utility cart around and proceed to dig through trash bins. Every day we were at the State Park, the camphost would stop his cart in front of trash bins, put a stool on the ground, grab his ‘picker’ and proceed to pick through the trash and open trash bags for at each site! We felt sorry for camper in site 23 as the trash bin is only 3 feet from their trailer! We observed the camphost slam the lid back and pick trash right next to their rig for a solid 15 minutes. And apparently rangers know about it as we witnessed a park ranger drive slowly by him while he was in action in front of #23. Ridiculous!

This is a nice campground in general. I was in the Stallion area which are all pull throughs right next to each other. You have the usual fire pit, picnic table under a Ramada, and what I appreciated the most, a brick/stone wall partially blocking your table from your neighbor and more importantly, the wind. Each site has its own water and electric hookup. The bathrooms were pretty dated, with the push button shower that everyone hates because there’s no way to control the temperature and you have to constantly press the dang thing. Visitor center is without any amenities like a gift shop or books about the region, solely a place for rangers to do their inside work. There were some beautiful trails around the park that are all lined in melon sized rocks- back breaking work to do that. I never saw a single person on the trails, though. Very quiet with mostly nice people except for the lady who stepped out of her camper to tell to get out of her site, which I wasn’t on. I was walking the dog, who decided to do her business on the road through campground in front of her site, so I was waiting for her to finish when this unpleasant person came out and called me an “Idiot” as well. These are the kind of people who are miserable in their own soul and I generally avoid them at all costs. Hope you don’t end up camped anywhere near her! 😆

Easy access from I-25. First time staying here and will definitely be back. I stayed in the Stallion section in the spring of 2023. Some nights there were quite a few campers and other nights the loop was 1/2 full. Site 35 is on a turn which may not seem ideal but it had a good privacy in all other views. Most of the sites a parallel pull thrus with good spacing and most have hedges or other vegetation. Also sites have covered ramadas. There are some easy strolling trails right next to this camping area. No real OTA except PBS.
