St. Mary Campground

Verizon speeds of 51Mbps download and 25 upload with a roof mounted Pepwave antenna. I couldn't get ATT to run a speed test on my phone. TMobile was roaming. Limited tree cover so Starlink and solar would work well.

This is a good spot to explore Glacier and it has good views. The sites themselves are overgrown and difficult to navigate much like Many Glacier. The B loop road is one way which puts your camp side on the road side depending on which spot you're in. The access road is in reasonable shape.

The site was very unlevel at 6 inches off side to side. Front to back was fine.

The largest campground within East Glacier NP was nice. Sites are small but enough space between neighbors that you don’t feel on top of them. We were in loop B. Loop A is for larger rigs and Loop C doesn’t matter….though generator use is restricted in one of those loops. Not overly scenic but close to everything you want to do. Plus nice if you can’t get a reservation for GTSR because the campsite guarantees your entry onto the road. Many Glacier was my FAVORITE! Would probably stay at Many Glacier campground next time.

Pros: dump and water close by. One of the few campgrounds with showers

Cons: showers aren’t that nice and only 4 showers for 150 campsites means it’s crowded in the morning and evening.

Main road into campground is fine but the roads in the campground are narrow with bumpy broken up asphalt with pit holes. The sites are narrow, overgrown and aren’t level. We had a picnic table and fire ring but no bear box. No showers in our loop A, and bathrooms are ok. This campground needs a little lovin’ but the location is great to get on Going To The Sun Rd and to Many Glacier area. We are getting 1 bar T-Mobile with .11mbs down/.14mbs up. Our site (A40) gets good sun exposure and clear view of the sky for Starlink. If you don’t have hydraulic levelers make sure to bring leveling blocks. Price we paid was with 50% discount for Access Pass.

I travelled here with a 35’ 5th wheel, long bed pickup and parked in two sites, A23 and A14, both dry, PT sites for $10/night with my Sr. Pass. The road was primarily asphalt but had gravel portions. Sites were gravel. The road was narrow, but pretty easy to navigate. A23 was totally exposed to the sun and did not have anyone close by. It was situated so the front door faced the road. The rangers would not let me pull in the wrong direction on the road to have my door on the picnic table side of the site. A14 was a shaded spot and needed one board under one side to get level. It was located right by the path to the river and Visitor’s Center but wasn't annoying. The shade was appreciated since it was so hot while I was there. The “yard” was pretty private from the road side. It was close to a water spigot (unthreaded) which was handy for filling water jugs. I managed to get enough sun on my solar panels to keep me operational with cautious use of power. The C loop was more exposed (good for solar) and had more impressive views. The bathhouse on that loop also had showers. Only had 1-2 bars LTE Verizon, no wifi and didn’t check for OTA signals. The camp hosts were wound pretty tight compared to most I have met. Great location for exploring both Going to the Sun Road and the Many Glacier area (about 30 minute drive) which was excellent. I’d definitely go back again.

Sites are $20/night (not $10). This Campground Converted from Reservation Only (Ugg…recreation.gov) to FCFS on 8/15/21. max allowed stay of 2-weeks.
The campground itself is ok, no hookups so it’s dry camping on Asphalt. Generator hours are limited to three 2-hour windows throughout the day.
Sites are odd semi-circles making it a challenge at most sites to get level.

The location is INSIDE Glacier National Park, so you DONT have to deal with securing “timed entry” permits…perhaps the best thing about the place.
Showers are provide (fair condition) but limited to only a couple so you can expect to wait in line during busy times.
Camp host actively monitors and writes “tickets” (really just notices) for any rule violations.

There’s a FREE SHUTTLE that departs from the visitor center…just a 10 minute walk (across a nice wooden pedestrian bridge…see pic) from this campground. The shuttle makes its way to various (about 15) stops in the park offering lots of nice hiking trails and awesome views / scenery.

This campground is a great location for quick access to the visitors center and some
GNP trailheads. The sites are pull through which was great. Firepit & picnic table at each site. The sites are pretty close together but do provide some privacy. Most of the sites have little or no shade. They do offer some educational programs and the host camper was very kind and answered all of my questions. Some highway noise.

I would stay here for the proximity to the hikes and waterways that make GNP so special, but only if no other options were available. Without any views the campground lacked the sense of place that some of the other campgrounds in the area with views offer. Our particular site felt like we were camping in an overgrown field - unkempt and not very lush which is surprising considering the other sites in the area. It also seemed crowded and did not offer much privacy.
