The road in is paved until you turn onto Division which is a dirt road with some minor washboard and then you turn again onto Sandstone Road which is a little better but very dusty. This will take you to the Sandstone Reservoir. This area has two sections around the reservoir. The sections most people have taken pictures of are on the west side of the reservoir, however the best spot in this area is on the east side of the reservoir at the bottom of the small hill at (46.3323860, -104.4742650). Absolutely gorgeous and quiet in the first week of October. No bugs but gnats at the evening but not real bad. Grouse landed on top of our trailer one morning and there were pelicans, small birds, geese, ducks and grouse all over. On the west side it is adjacent to a large herd of cows so if you don’t mind cow noise , it is a good spot. There is a restroom on both loops but they are not maintained and they have warning signs on them saying that. In early October, both were locked. The water was turned off but there was a sign saying the water had harmful bacteria so you should boil it if it is on..
Based on being on the water, this area is best in the cooler weather so as to avoid bugs. Fall was perfect with daytime highs in 70s and nights in the 40s. But I think it would be worth it even if you have some summer bugs
If you boondock, you will love this place, bring in water and you will be set. There are about 7-8 spots on the east side and about 5 on the west side. They can handle most rigs up to 30 feet but they also have a couple like where I marked ours that can handle any size r/v even with a toad. Those would be our site and the last site at the end of the road on the east side.
Most sites have fire rings and picnic tables. Some tables have a sun guard facing west to give you more shade.
Verizon had two bars but went to 4 bars with our WeBoost. Easy downloads

We stopped here on our first southeastern Montana road trip. Just outside of Baker, Montana about 6 miles down a well maintained dirt road is the South Sandstone Reservoir. There are several 7 day camping sites on either side of the lake. The water is clean and the area is well maintained. We saw several fishing boats in the lake while we were there.
It is an excellent stop for one or two nights. Quiet and very little traffic. We stayed on a Monday night and were the only campers at the lake. Beautiful sunset and sunrise on the lake. The temps were a bit warm the middle of August but the breeze across the lake helped with that.
The two pit toilets were very clean and well stocked. There were also a few small trash receptacles available for use.
The only real downfall were the gnats. Lots and lots of gnats! Non biting but very annoying. They filled the camper every time we opened the door. So keep that in mind. I think you could get just about any rig to this location. The roads are good with no bad turns or curves. Well maintained. We will use this as an overnight stop in the future.

A fantastic yet remote spot a bit off the beaten path. We had plenty of privacy. The kids and husband also really enjoyed the view and the peace and quiet. It was well maintained and was nice and clean.
