“Very nice area for some relatively quiet dispersed camping”

Reviewed Jul 30, 2018

Overall Rating

Very nice and scenic area. Relatively quiet with some traffic traveling over Weston Pass Rd over the summit. Plenty of dispersed camping sites on the East side of Weston Pass Rd beginning about 1 mile West of the FS fee camp ground.

County Road 22 is very well maintained. As you get closer to the summit, it gets a bit rougher but easily passable with an SUV or truck. 4WD is probably a must during the early or late seasons when weather is worse.

County Road 7 on the Western side of the Pass is a bit rougher and takes more time to descend. Some recent road work has been done to improve the road, but it's still rough and narrower than the Eastern side. Still passable with an SUV, just slower.

No cell service in the upper portion where I stayed.

Eastern side of the Pass has more dispersed camping sites and appeared to be less used than the Western side.

The area may still be less traveled right now especially on the Eastern side due to the recent fires near Fairplay and 285.

“High country boondocking”

Reviewed Jun 03, 2016

Overall Rating

About a mile north of the established NFS campground, alongside the gravel road and river, are numerous pullouts available for boondocking. Some are actually down another parallel running dirt road and are quite nice. While these sites may be best used by smaller rigs, it is do-able with moderate sized trailers with some extra care and knowledge that there are not a great deal of places to turn around a long rig. The dirt road leading in is about 14 miles long, but actually very well maintained.

Definitely, once camp is setup, continue up the road to the pass (weather permitting) to see the old ruins along the way.
