The hosts are overly accommodating and are so friendly. It's a pretty quiet place but is very family friendly. Beautiful sunsets and sunrises - and we even got a day of snow this week! That really made the mountains to the side even more beautiful! There is a little Merchandise store next door (almost) that has a few staple foods as well as whatever you need for maintenance/repair. Otherwise, it's quite a drive to the nearest hardware store or walmart. Be stocked up when you come so that you can just spend your time here. The campground is pretty basic - a gravel lot, pretty much -- but they offer full hookups and they accept Passport America, so you can't beat that rate! We will definitely stay again if we're passing through!!

We were looking for a place away from crowds and traffic noise. Smugglers Roost proved to be the perfect setting with Mountain views and dark skies at night. We chose to purchase campsites here and make this our regular winter destination.

We stayed here for one night. It was a quiet place. There were showers, bathroom and laundry room. And they had electricity and water. They provided all these amenities and only $15/night, which was very reasonable. Laundry was $2.50/ washing +drying. Gene was very friendly and has a passion for building community for future generations of astronomy lovers. He also gave us tips about the surrounding areas. He suggested us to visit Bisbee and we did and loved it. Will definitely stay here again if we travel this part of country.

Definitely off the beaten path with no hey noise at all. Great view of the mountains and plenty of hiking opportunities. Our host Gene was very friendly. He shares his love of astronomy nightly and shows you the planets through his telescope. I would have loved to stay longer. His vision is a work in progress.

There are so many cool things to see & do in the around there, that we took a different day trip each day, but we didn't even scratch the surface! We're coming back as soon as we can, especially when the snow flies!
You can tell that the folks at Smugglers love where they live & are really good at showing people where to go & what to do.
It's the wild west out there & its been some years since the campsite was full. The place still needs some TLC, and they are working hard to shape it up. But, it had everything we needed with the hook-up & wifi.
They are in the process of adding several things. The bamboo plants were awesome! LOL! We look forward to our next visit to see how things have progressed!

Great home base for exploring! Their website was an excellent guide to all the things to see and do in the area. We especially enjoyed the Chiricahua Monument. The property was quiet with a beautiful view of the mountains. The host was friendly & helpful! We enjoyed viewing through the telescope & will definitely be back!

“Not Good ”

Looked at reviews and seemed ok. We were under the impression this was close to a lot activities. It’s not the drive off the main road was long and it is out in the middle of nowhere. Campground is in need of a lot of work. Did stay because we didn’t feel safe.

Tom’n’Jane,
Thank you for your note – good, bad or indifferent. We appreciate that you took the time and effort to travel over to Smugglers’ Roost. Had you stopped in for information we could’ve shown you around the tangible improvements that you missed. If you were onsite on the September 27th, you would’ve been able talk to our manager, our permanent residents (with Tiny Home & Class A RV) and some of our first guests - a nationally acclaimed spiritual organization with a 40’ Class A rig and tents, that chose to stay with us during their cycling tour of the Southwest.
Our General Store, Restroom/Shower and Laundry facilities are newly operational. The captions for photos posted on Campendium note that the amenities are underway & our website www.smugglersroost.net clearly shows progress photos with projected dates for final completion.
Granted, we are in the early stages of re-opening, since the Phelps Dodge days, but know that this property was functional & fully occupied for many years as a worker’s community. Therefore, our 432 Full Hook-up RV sites are served by a robust infrastructure which includes 50 amp electric, DSL WiFi (60 MB down 20 MB up), 2.5 million gallons per year of potable water rights and sewer. It’s a project in its aesthetic infancy that must be envisioned to fully understand the immense value. Fortunately, our first permanent residents were able to identify that potential and are in full construction mode alongside us in order to help us bring our vision to full reality.
Rusty’s RV Park is great and fully mature; we’ve stayed there, but we think that the availability of an 8-times larger site, with national advertising will bring Rusty business as well. We’re not in direct competition, our discounted pricing reflects that, and our goal is to secure the future for all of the surrounding communities including Animas, Rodeo, Portal and Lordsburg.
We only ask that as you frequent this area that you come by and visit us again, whether to stay, trade or just to have a cup of Smugglers’ Roast, our home-roasted coffee. If you would have opened your window during your drive-by, you could’ve smelled the coffee brewing!
Please give us another chance, I think that our vision for this community will rub off!
Warm regards,
The Smugglers’ Roost Team

We stayed at Rusty’s RV Ranch while checking out the area. Rusty’s is great!!! After checking out the Smuggler’s Roost website we took the 15 mile day trip to check out their facility for possible future stays as the place seemed and looked very interesting.
What an absolute disappointment. There was no one staying there, all the construction their website says is going on is non existent and looks like none of it was ever started. They have online booking, so beware, nothing is as it is portrayed on their website. Place looked like a real rat hole (polite version).
Reason for the post is I don’t want any Campendium folks to get taken!! If I could go with negative stars, I would do so.
