The Slate River Valley offers breathtaking mountain and river views along with many different recreation options along its length. It is frequented in the summer by anglers, mountain bikers, hikers and nature lovers.
Slate Creek dispersed sites are accessed via a narrow gravel road past the O Be Joyful Campground. This road is a single lane at times with limited turn off, against a drop-off. There are on guardrails on this road. Please use caution when driving, especially during peak times.
It is recommend that all vehicles greater than 35-40 ft. do not attempt to drive beyond Musician's Camp (approx 6 miles from Gothic Road) due to lack of turn around space, rough roads, and/or lack of sites with adequate parking for large vehicles.
Site 3 is located on a side spur past the formal campground. This side spur is very rutted and contains a steep angled turn that may be difficult for tall or long rigs. It is the first site on the right, against the road. One can hear and see the river from this site which offers the ability to use Solar and Starlink. It is mostly level and far enough off the road for some privacy. There are two other sites on this spur.
There is no cellular connection in the Slate River Valley.

This is our favorite mountain town and place to hike. We come here at least once a year to camp, hike, and enjoy the town. Unfortunately, every year we come, it is getting more and more populated with people which also equates to more trash and a bigger footprint on the land. We camped in an open area that has vault toilets near by and by the weekend, it was packed full of vans, trailers, tents, and vehicles! We were a bit shocked that people were parked and camping on vegetation, instead of staying on the dirt areas. The Gothic Valley area has already been closed to dispersed camping during the peak summer months because of campers trashing the area. I'm afraid this is going to happen to all the areas around Crested Butte. =(. If you do any sort of dispersed camping, please follow Leave No Trace ethics.
@letsgogeopro would stay here again
