“Beautiful Free Camping near Craters of the Moon”

Reviewed Nov 25, 2018

Overall Rating

Location:
This campsite is located off of Cutoff Road 1 miles North of US HWY 26, 8 miles SW of Carey, ID, and 33 miles from the Craters of the Moon Visitor Center.

Directions & Road Info:
From US HWY 26 turn North onto Cuttoff Road which is paved for a very short distance then turns to a well maintained gravel road. If you come from HWY 26 you'll see a sign on the right that says Silver Creek BLM. The road after the sign leads directly to this campsite.

About Campsites here:
This campsite is very large, large enough for quite a few rigs but we had our privacy here. Instead of driving straight into this campsite, if you turn left just before it you'll see a picnic area on the right. You can camp here, there are tent pads, covered picnic tables, and pit toilets. There is even a food prep area at both picnic tables. If you continue down the road some more you'll find a small spot on the right that you can fit at least a 35' rig into. If you continue down the road a but more on the right will be another small picnic area with a picnic table, pit toilet, and handicapped spot. All of these camping areas are right next to Silver Creek and are quite scenic.
All of these sites are pretty level and large, and any size RV can find a place to camp here. It seems to fill up pretty quickly with Craters of the Moon National Monument being so close by.

Pros:
There are quite a few pros to camping here. The main one being that it's completely free with a 14 night camping limit. It's also completely open to the sun which is great for solar, it's very quiet, and very dark here - perfect for stargazing. There is also this beautiful creek - Silver Creek - near all the sites.

Cons:
Some cons of staying here are that there is no shade so if you're looking for shade this is not the place for you. It has also been pretty windy here which can kick up some dust. We've also noticed where are a ton of flies here but we're not sure if that's normal.

Things every camper needs:
You can find free potable water and a dump station at Castle's Corner at the Exxon gas station in Carey, ID 7.5 miles away. You can also get some groceries at Castle's Corner but it's very limited so I recommend provisioning in a larger city before arriving. The Exxon at Castle's Corner does also have propane fill and exchange. Carey, ID's post office also offers general delivery.

“Great free camping near Craters of the Moon”

Reviewed Nov 10, 2018

Overall Rating

Enjoyed our stay here while visiting Craters of the Moon. There’s a loop with 2 established areas for camping with covered tables, grills and clean vault toilets, plus one other disbursed spot. There aren’t a ton of spots- only enough room for about 5 rigs in the entire area, so I wouldn’t arrive late. Really nice spot considering the amenities you get for free. They were regrading the road while we were there, so access should be even better now.
