The spot is easy to get to and is just outside the city of Las Cruces. Las Cruces was surprisingly nice. I knew nothing about the city before staying at this site. We were only going to spend two nights at this spot and visit White Sands before moving on to Arizona, but the city of Las Cruces was so close by to this site and so nice, we stayed a few extra days to explore, eat, and enjoy what it had to offer.
We arrived on a Sunday in May. There was only one other person camping there. Each night there was usually one other car/tent at the location. During the day, there are people comming and going, usually mountain bikers. The BLM rangers go up and down the road several times a day. The first day we got there, a ranger drove past and gave us some information about the area. There are 4 sites with fire pits available. Posted signs are all along the road stating NOT to drive off the road. You have to stay at the designated spots, or likely be asked to move. It was no problem for us since it was not too crowded. About 1.5 miles up the road is the BLM ranger station and several trails. It is worth the walk up to the dripping springs...there is an old hotel/sanatorium to see.
There are no facilities at the location, no trash, no bathroom, no shower, etc. It's just a dirt road (like a rough gravel driveway...but flat). The spots could easily accomdate a large camper trailer.

Our site was gorgeous and faced the mountains. There is a cool trail next that starts next to the overflow area.
There are no services at all here. No bathrooms, no hook ups, no water. Come prepared!
No problem with cell coverage.

Lovely people around each time and very quiet through the night. The sunsets against the mountains behind are beautiful and the lights of Las Cruces look cool but aren't too bright to distract trying to sleep. Great spot!

I do not know how much further it goes but the hiking on the Sierra Vista was a beautiful hike and sunset over Los Cruces was beautiful! Rangers come through often and the area was nice and clean 14 day stay is allowed. The Visitor Center at the end of Dripping Springs Road has bathrooms and water and a hiking trail there as well and picnic area. it's roughly two miles further down Dripping Springs to the dead end at the visitor center.

There are a couple of confusing spots where the grass has been flattened but they are NOT real spots and we witnessed a couple people being asked to leave. The park road is gravel. We parked in the rear parking lot area in our 65ft long rig.

As for the negatives: 1) It was super windy but it just helped rock us to sleep. 2) There was obvious human waste with used toilet paper 10-foot from the site; I have since covered it with rocks. 3) There was used condom next to the fire pit, again now covered with a rock.
Some humans suck.
Regardless this place was awesome and we would stay here again. The stars at night and the morning sun peaking over the mountains were both incredible sights to take in.
