Plenty to do on the base and of course in town. Biloxi is not very far away, casino's are in both towns. GP & Biloxi public beaches are on the Gulf so nice white sands (Pensacola is the best though.)

The base has two RV parks and we stayed at the one that is near the lake and dog park. The campsites were large with well manicured grass in between the sites. There is a train nearby that you hear throughout the night and a weekend drag strip nearby.
Plenty of walking paths near the campground.

Nice concrete pads with full hookups and free WiFi. Close to Gulfport and all the casinos. Some train whistle but not bad.

I hate to rate the campground based on the surroundings but I have no choice. The staff was amazing and I honestly felt secure the entire time we stayed. However right outside the main gate you aren’t in a great area (like many bases unfortunately). The sound of the train horn going off every hour was enough to drive me mad. Also the street right behind the park is the cops Main Street to use to respond to the rough area…. So all in all I’m happy to be sleeping without train horns and a cop station right outside tonight.
Sites were great, lots of activities to use on post. It’s a great option but bring ear plugs.

No alligator or snake sighted although plenty of warning signs. Gorgeous residential streets surrounding a leafy quadrangle boardwalk,

Train noise was tolerable and stopped during the evening and night hours.
Five minute drive to the beach and easy 1.5 hr drive to New Orleans.

Campground is on the Naval Construction Battalion Center (home of the Navy's Sea Bees) that is convenient to beaches, boating, casinos, fishing, and more!
The campground is well maintained and clean. The WIFI was a pleasent experience, because it actually worked all the time. Did not experience the normal slow downs, typically found in RV parks that offer WIFI.
There are actually two campgrounds at Shields RV Park.
The main campground is near the entrance to the base! It has FHUs, WIFI, and Cable TV. The only drawback with this location is there are several trains a day that pass within a few blocks, so you hear their horns blowing. There is also a busy road near by with lots of truck traffic (the Port of Gulfport is the main port of entry for Dole and Chiquita bananas in the southern part of the US).
The second campground is on the far western side of the base, near the golf gourse and lake. It has FHUs; however, it doesn't have WIFI or Cable TV. This location is newer, has trees, and appears to be quieter than the main campground.
Besides the casinos and beaches, the next best thing to do is to visit Ship Island! A ferry departs Gulfport Harbor daily - March through October. Ship Island is part of the Gulf Islands National Sea Shore (National Park Service) and is 11 miles off the coast in the Gulf Mexico. Well worth the trip for it's excellent beaches and a chance to visit a Civil War Fort.
Will gladly stay here again!
