Traveling Hwy 90 through West Texas to/from Big Bend? Don't miss this great park with beautiful pictographs. Hotter than hell in the summer, the rest of the year the trails and hiking is great. Great spots with tables, some covered, clean bath house. NO TREES, it's West Texas. Dump Station. Great Visitors Center.

This park was very easy to get to and a nice stop on the way from San Antonio to Big Bend. We stayed in the primitive sites but were a ten minute walk from a bathroom with hot showers. If you want to stay here with hookups, I would recommend making a reservation. Those sites were full in the middle of the week in January. There was no cell phone service but free WiFi at the headquarters and near the bathrooms in the campground.
The volunteers at the headquarters were very friendly and helpful. We did an 8 mile hike along the canyon rim and to see the Rio Grande. There was an excellent museum and a tour into the canyon to see ancient pictographs for $8. You cannot go into the canyon outside of this tour.
Overall, this was a great place to stay. The park is pretty small and you can do everything it has to offer in one day.

We stayed in the Desert Vista CG, and we were fortunate that no one was placed in the site in front of us because we had a lovely view out the windshield. The CG road and sites were tight, but they had good space in between them with nice vegetation all around.
This pretty park is on the smaller side as Texas State Parks go, but it has a bit of everything to keep you occupied. There is a nice nature trail with a bird blind, although we didn't spot any birds this trip. The VC looks small when you first step in, but actually has a large, winding exhibit space that is very nicely done. The staff and camp hosts were all helpful and friendly. There are several trails of varying length within the park, all easily accessed from the campgrounds or VC. While phone signal from your campsite will probably not happen for you, out on the trails, you will get good signal from Mexico (be sure your plan includes international roaming or keep your phones turned off!) There are ramadas, benches, and trash cans every mile along the trails. The pictograph boat tour was not available while we were there due to low water levels in the river.
We signed up for and thoroughly enjoyed the pictograph cave tour, which is the only way visitors are able to access the canyon floor. The ranger who led the tour was very knowledgeable and interesting. Even if tours aren't normally your thing, we strongly recommend this one.
The closest town is Comstock is a 10-15 minute drive away, and has only limited services. There is a P.O., small gas station and convenience store, and a diner or two.
The night skies are amazing here.

We stayed here while headlong to big bend. Although I would have had trouble find enough hiking for a week, it was great for a day. I would like to return for more. I did the rim trail and saw many white tail on the way back. The staff was very helpful, the site plenty big, and the skies were very dark.

The camping spots are basic, we stayed at the first spot as it was the only one left with full hook - ups. Sites 22, 23, 25, and 26 are likely better spots (full hook ups).
The hike was the highlight - you must do the canyon ridge hike.

Real price because day use fee was added on top was $20, which is pricey for dry camping. Many burs or spurs in "grass" near picnic table at our site. Our dog and I were both pricked. Showers good. Trails & museum are beautiful and very well done. Decent stopover before Big Bend Area.

The primitive area is even more spread out, very large spaces, more level, views are even better I would say. You get a clear view of the sunrise on this side, and are closer to the trail access. Try to get a site on the eastern side of the primitive camping and you will have an even better view and space (I think these are odd numbered sites). The hikes are very nice: some flat, easier hiking but with big rewards of canyon views and you may even spot a fossil or two! No service except for ATT which does work well. There is a dump station in the hookups area.

We spent five days here to do some hiking and relaxing. A five day stay is too long for the amount of activities there are in the area. In hindsight, I probably should have done only 3 days.
We stayed in one of the premium primitive sites. It was easy to pull in. The view of the horizon was amazing. Others have covered the beauty of the hiking trails and sights.
We only had one bar of occasional 1X on Verizon which allowed for the occasional text message to get through. My husband's Tracfone must be on an AT&T tower. His flip phone was able to get 2 bars of 3G.
Our investment in our WiFi Ranger really paid off in this location. We could see the visitor's center and were able to pick up their WiFi in our RV. It wasn't the speediest Internet...but it was much appreciated when we had a nasty hail and thunderstorm.
The campground WiFi enabled up to track the aforementioned storm via the National Weather Service website. I would highly recommend having a weather radio with you when staying in this location. You can't rely upon the Internet or your phone to get weather warnings. If you are tenting, be prepared for nasty weather. The hail storm dented our vehicles. People in tents had to scramble into their cars when it got really bad. But that is good advice no matter where you camp.
We had five OTA television stations, all from over the border. Channel 5 would often have movies or kid's shows in English.
We would stay here again if in this location. Just stock up before you arrive. Del Rio is a good 30 minutes away.
