“Criminal citation, for pitching tent outside of poorly delineated area”

Reviewed 10/16/2020

I was camping at site 109; a seemingly very small clearing, feet from the road. At one corner of this clearing is a 5 foot wide trail which leads to a larger clearing, with a large fire pit. I figured this was part of the campsite, pitched my tent there and left my car in the small initial clearing. Woke up to a police officer telling me that although he knew very well the site delineation was very ambiguous, he had no choice but to give me a citation for camping in violation of my permit, which is no less than a criminal offense in MD. Officer admitted regularly ticketing campers this way, and that his superiors didn't care to remedy.

3 stars because the rest was fantastic!

My hubby and I along with our trusty protector Mocha spent 5 days in Savage River State Forest in Maryland... No TV no radio no cell service...we watched the Nature Channel LIVE.. did not see much wildlife but heard them at night.. tree frogs that were almost deafening but wonderful and owls... Even though the sites in the State Forest are spaced very well (closest to our site was at least 1/2 mile) they are close to the road... There was a very nice walk in sight cross the water from us nobody was in it.. Saturday night was a busy night lots of traffic ...all other days and nights it was very minimal... There are two state parks within the State Forest.. Savage River State Park and New Germany State Park.. we did not check out their sites... Once we found the site we wanted we never left ❣️. All boondocking spots within the State Forest are for tents or small travel trailers 25 ft or under ... we used the dump station in the New Germany State Park area for free
