Overview of Sandbank Stream Campground
Camping in non-designated sites is not permitted. There is no potable water within the monument. Bring water with you or be prepared to filter water from water sources. Campfires can only be kindled with a valid Maine Forest Service campfire permit and only in designated locations such as established campsites and lean-tos. A free permit is easily acquired prior to a visit by contacting the Maine Forest Service: 45 Radar Rd, Ashland, ME 04732 207-435-7693

Overall Rating
This campsite served it's purpose for exploring Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument. There are four or five sites in a sandy cul-de-sac. There is a pit toilet and picnic tables. The real attraction to this campsite is the proximity to the loop road and the rest of the monument. We woke early and drove the loop road counter clockwise to the first over look to view Mount Katahdin for sunrise. It was really gorgeous. The loop road is a bit primitive and probably should only be driven with a small RV or a van. Lots of great hiking in the area. One of the big perks to the monument is that you can have dogs. Baxter State Park allows no pets in the park at all. Can't wait to go back.
