I didn't go through in the winter but I also showed up there in a two-wheel drive truck with a trailer (pop-up camper). There are tons of places to camp just west of the freeway that are easily accessed on packed sand roads, as I recall. I camped in this easy area, and explored the main dirt road going up towards the San Lorenzo canyon, but I didn't go into the canyon itself. That's a separate camping area. Bottom line: if the San Lorenzo canyon itself doesn't work out for you for some reason, you have tons of spots just west of the freeway that are perfectly good for a night's stay.

We made it with a 24.5 ft motor home. But driving mostly 5 to 10 miles an hour. I would not do it with a 25ft trailer and a truck. Also don’t go after it rains. You will be driving on a washboard road and a river wash all the time.

I don't see any reason you couldn't. I've seen regular cars make it into the canyon. It's not a great road, but doesn't require 4WD.
