“Excellent Park, Large Campgrounds”

Sam A. Baker is one of the oldest state parks in Missouri and is beautiful. We were in Campground 2, but both campgrounds look to be similar. A river runs along the edge of both campgrounds but only certain spots have direct access and sometimes it involves a short walk through woods. We stayed the first two nights in spot #185 which has a short path directly from the site to a wonderful spot on Big Creek. This creek flows pretty fast in the Spring and Fall but it sounds like it can dry up almost completely in the Summer. It was flowing when we were there and we enjoyed taking our camp chairs down to our "beach" and putting some distance between us and the ever present stereo blasters. Unfortunately on the second day a group of 8 or 10 people moved in the spot directly across from us, cranked up their speakers and started riding their bikes and walking directly through our site to get to that path and the river. One of them did apologize as he did it but explained that's just how it goes when the only path to the river is in your site. At that point we were already packing up to move, so I didn't engage with him.

We moved to the other side of the campground to spot #160, which is a basic site but more private and has a view of the river. We enjoyed our last night there very much.

In general, this is an average campground. There is decent space between the sites and spots with either trees or open space. The hosts were great to work with and for the most part any noise died down in the evening. I would expect both campgrounds to be packed in the peak months, so plan ahead.

Any bothers related to camping are worth it though as this park offers some of the best hiking and canoe/kayaking opportunities in the state. It's a beautiful area and worth the trip.

Very old beautiful CCC park.

Campground #1 on the banks of the Big Creek where it meets the St Francis River is a nice roomy campground with easy access to a large area of stoney beach near the boat ramp. The sites are shaded by large trees and come in many sizes. We had no trouble parking our 38 foot toy hauler. The shower house is well maintained but there are no benches in the showers so bring a chair or stool to keep your clothes off the damp floor.

Campground #2 is near access to the Big Creek and the Store/Grill. The sites are closer together here but there are many with shade and some that a big rig can back into. The water accesses are packed on the weekend by campers and the locals bringing their kids to enjoy the water, so get a parking spot early and plan to stay all day. The store stocks all of the camp basics and some gift items. The grill has good sized menu of grill food in good sized portions so no need to waste time cooking.

There are many trails for hiking, horses and bicycles. The equestrian camping area of the park has not been updated in 100 years. One vault toilet and 6 hitching posts. Major update needed.

NO phone or WiFi signal for MILES.
