Sacred White Shell Mountain Dispersed Camping

We stayed here for 3 nights and what a nice view. The road getting to where we camped (the second spot on the right after the parking lot) was not to bad. There were a few folks that liked to speed down the road though. Our campsite was really littered, so my wife and I tried our best to clean up our campsite. It’s very sandy here too unless you go higher, but the road gets worse the further you go up it.

The place is what we expected, quite with beautiful scenery, we came from Florida and for us this place a treat. Thank you BLM, funny as soon as we finish setting up our camper, a small like sandatorm welcome us came from middle of nowhere , but we didnt mind at all, we love it . Although the drive going through the mountain here was overwhelming but it was worth it!

There’s a parking lot when you first pull onto the road and then a handful of campsites leading up to the mountain. Good view of the mountains and stars. Something must have been going on while I was there at two police drove past, but they didn’t bother me. The only complaint were the cars down the road with their brights on half the night. I would stay here again, and recommend bringing firewood if you’re arriving early enough.

-Pros: Close to the National Park, Free, Beautiful views of the mountain and valley, Great solar, Decent Verizon signal.
-Cons: Awning wrecking wind, Blowing sand that makes you take shelter and gets in EVERYTHING, Busy road with ATV’ers and day hikers, Lots of campers close to you.

Good for a night or two, but don’t expect wilderness solitude. We would have stayed longer if not for the mini sand storms.

The views are great and we were not alone out here. The road is very dusty and several jeeps and trucks did not slow down and dusted us up. We camped across from a new Helipad that was put in by the State for emergency use. We experienced a lot of nats in our RV. We camped in July and I would recommend camping in cooler weather because we camped in an open field.

My daughter and I our “Road Tripping” Colorado. Saw a YouTube video on this place (BLM land) so we gave it a go. Our big tent broke on the process of setting it up. No biggie. Lucky we had the small back up with us also. This area is beautiful. Mountain back drops with open prairie/desert. Roads are easily traveled. Seen all types of campers and tents. Large 5th will be limited to how far into the area you feel comfortable adventuring. All other sizes, no problem. Watched numerous storms roll past. Night time star gazing is awesome. Not to bad for the price-free (or thank your tax dollars).

We arrived around noon and were awestruck by the vastness of the camping area. Thank you to the Bureau of Land Management for having the lands available. Also thanks to Jared Gillis with Campendium for helping us find this awesome spot. Nothing to complain about here. We have nothing like this in South Carolina. This is our first time out this way and would come back in a second!

Wow it's amazing here! We arrived on a Saturday afternoon in our 35 ft 5th wheel and had no issues finding a spot. The road is dirt and has a few bumpy spots but not bad at all. It was easy to move around here and bigger rigs would fit without a problem ( just don't go past when the road turns from dirt to rocks, only tents and small vans can fit there). If you need to fill water and dump you have a few options: The National Park has free water and a dump station. Bigger rigs could fit in the park to use the dump station and water fill without an issue, although we just came with our portable tank to dump and brought a water bag. Another option for dump and water is in Alamosa at the Maverick gas station. They have water by the pumps and the dump station is in the back where the trucks and RVs go.

This fit our needs- close to Sand Dunes NP, easy access for 5th wheel, and free. Great mountain views with plenty of spots for all sizes. Road was in okay condition- lots of washboard but we just took it slow. That being said we parked in first turnout large enough for us. Other people drive the road at about 40mph which doesn’t really seem necessary… we walked up towards the end of the road, didn’t make it to the top, there are spots as the elevation starts to climb but only suitable for tents, would recommend finding a spot in the flats if you have a trailer or motorhome.

A little bit of trash in the area but not too bad. Very windy and cold for us, but wasn’t a surprise. Would guess it’s pretty much always windy here. Had someone park 20ft from our trailer our last night which we didn’t understand as there were plenty of other options, luckily we were leaving the next morning.
