Only a few campers here this time of year…lots of choices.
Potable water available at various locations.
Dump station available.
Sites clean and mostly level.
Restrooms clean.
Showers not open. I think May 1st is the date they are available.
Lake level very low.
Lots of hiking opportunities.
Well worth a visit.

Stayed in November so it was chilly when the sun went down, but the days were pleasant.
Sites have big fire pits, and new tables, some are even covered tables. The whole park has new asphalt and gravel ground cover. Lots of grassy areas, big trees, cool hiking trail, saw wild turkeys, and blue herons. Really clean bathrooms, too.

I didn't see any electrical hookups. I didn't know that was offered. I have solar and don't care about hookups. There were various potable water spigots throughout the park. The EXTREMELY nice park ranger told me to use any I wanted but please don't stay hooked up to them because they are there to be shared by all park guests.
There is an incorrect address listed, either here or on their website. When I exited I-80, my GPS told me to take a left; the signage pointed right for the dam. Follow the sign to the right. It's easy and clearly marked.
The park is nice. It's on the river. I stayed at the lower campground. The hairpin downhill road in looks daunting, but is freshly paved, and very easy to navigate. Fellow campers were very nice, although someone up the way ran a noisly generator most of the day. Not the park's fault. There are assholes camping wherever you go.
I took advantage of the shower. It was an overhead "rain" showerhead, with plenty of hot water. The shower was spacious, and lots of hooks and a shelf to put stuff while you used it. Heaven!
I stayed close to the river and although it was very low and nothing coming over the dam, there is a section of the campsite that you can walk across (Group camping area) to easily access the river bank. My dog and I enjoyed sticking our feet in an cooling off.
I got to know a couple fellow campers because there seemed to be one spot where they could get any signal for texts and phone calls, so that was the "cell phone hangout." I found that close to the river I had one bar, and if I repositioned myself inside my van, I could get two. My internet (Verizon, through Nomad Internet) worked. It was slow, but it connected.
Great experience. Nice place. Don't blame such a beautiful campground for the heat and your bad mood.

We pulled in mid-afternoon in July it was 100+ out. The camp ground was pretty empty. We had been boon-docking for a few days we needed water and some electric to run the A/C as it was HOT! It was hard to find the few electrical sites. We found 1 actual site occupied and a dirt area with 3 other Boxes that were Willy Nilly! There was one RV parked by two of the boxes and a 3rd that was in a weird spot. We tried to get into the 3rd and found our door opened on a bush! I started to get heat exhaustion helping the hubby back in. So we plugged into cool off and hydrate. Once I felt better we moved the RV around so we could use the door. Tries to plug in and the Electric no longer worked!
Maybe I was doing the math wrong but $10 for our RV, $10 for the Toad day use fee, an additional $20 for the campsite, plus $10 for electric =$50 not the$20-25 we expected. For Dirt full sun, No water or dump at the site. We had no ATT service at our site and The showers were closed.
After the electric stopped working we bailed!
Note it was a little tight getting into with our 36 foot RV and toad but doable. And not far off of I 80.

Less than a hour southwest of Winnemucca, located on a large reservoir, it's a nice CG. It's been refurbished, it has nice amenities (bathrooms, firepits, shade) and it has some views. It's made up of two CG's. The lower CG is among trees, near the weakly flowing river with pit toilets, picnic tables and fire rings. All the sites can handle trailers of varying lengths. Ok privacy.
The upper CG has no privacy between sites, but is brand new and has nice bathrooms and a good view of the mountains past the reservoir. Except for a couple of exceptions, any trailers at this CG need to be small. (See photos) I can't imagine being up there during the middle of summer. It's probably cooler on the sun -- and less crowded. But the reservoir is a good place to escape because it's large and the water is cold.
There is a gas station at the freeway exit and some private campgrounds on the short drive to the CG. In sum, it's not a place for me to hang out, but it was a great stopover on my way to SE Oregon.

A nice ranger came through to check on us as we got some unexpected snow. He mentioned the site is very busy during the seasonal months and can be difficult to get a spot as they are first come first serve. Really glad we got to experience this site during the peaceful time of year and look forward to going back!

We stayed here on a Friday in early October. Super easy to get to and there are a few different areas to camp. We ended up going down to the lower loop, below the dam. Lots of trees and shade down there, with a great loop that could get you access to the river. We set up camp in site number 5, which is backed up to the hillside, so we lost sunlight pretty quick. We saw turkeys and other animals in the area. Super peaceful camping area that we would definitely return to.
Only 2 negatives that I will share. 1) there were a LOT of bugs after sunset. So much so that we had to go inside to avoid being eaten alive. There was a burn ban, so maybe being able to have a fire would have helped a bit. 2) there were pit toilets and some plumbed toilets, but both left some cleaning to be desired. The pit toilets in the lower loop were especially nasty - smelled horrid and the aforementioned bugs were just as thick inside.
Those are both minor issues in my opinion and we would definitely come back here for an extended stay to explore the area.
Prior to departing, we drove through the other camping areas, including the loop up on the lake near the boat launch. That area seemed much less private with no trees or much between campsites. For us, the lower loop was the right choice!

We passed through here Oct 13, 2020 and needed a place to camp. The address takes you south of 80 but it's actually on the north side of the freeway. Honor system, envelop drop box. We arrived at sunset and we're new to RV driving so we were hesitant to drive down the hill where most of the people were. We started out on top (aqua colored dot in the map pic) in the gravel, only one other camper, (had a water pump spigot, fire ring and table) and a nice view down, above the other campers. We decided to try down the hill but we didnt want to be super close to people so we just cruised the small inner loop and picked site 22 (same stuff as the upper gravel spot but with the big tree), close to the dam, far end. We could see the dam but it looked too far for small kids to hike down to the water and mine were happily playing in the dirt. The 2 sites on the other side of the small road had electric but no trees, were vacant so we had no neighbors. We did see people use the bathrooms but didnt check that out. I knock half a star because both dumpsters I used were full. The other half star was for checking in with no attendant/host and no site map or guide to tell us where we would fit, which sites had what, how much they were and some sites didnt have number markings. No t-mobile even with boosters but signal is fine on top near the dam. Oh and we saw a few bunnies!
