“quiet camp, not far from Painted Rocks State Park”
I had originally planned on staying at Painted Rocks State Park campground but between the higher fees ($14/night) and the large noisy group that had already set up camp I went elsewhere and ended up at Rombo. The camp was much quieter and cheaper at $8/night.
The campsites are clean, well spaced and fairly private. The gravel parking pads are large - just about any RV could get into most of the sites. And the access road up to camp is a paved two-lane road so access isn't an issue. All sites have a large concrete table and fire ring. The sites closest to the river do have a bit of a hike between the parking area and the tables but the other sites are fairly open and level. There is a camp host on duty. Pit toilets are at the center of the camp loops as well as a water pump. No garbage service, pack it in pack it out.
Bear activity is high in the area and the camp host was making rounds through the camp to warn people that black bears had been in the area recently. There are no bear boxes available so be sure you can properly store your belongings in your vehicle. The Bitterroot River had some flooding in early 2018 and washed out a campsite as well as made quite a mess of any access direct to the river for fishing. Be prepared to do a little bushwhacking to get to the river directly from camp.
Giving 4 stars only because this camp is WAAY out there - its quite a trek to get to this area.
