While camping here during spring break, 24 were supposed to get 3 inches of snow and I’m not worried about the roads other than having snow on them. This is a good base away from the Ruidoso crowds where you can run into town and see the sights, or just hang out and camp.
Location is also close to Capitan where the Smoky the Bear national monument is.
We weren’t put off by camping near where horses would be (none here during our stay) as we’ve learned Cowboys are the kind of people you want around.

Quiet and peaceful nights. Thank you, Fort Stanton. I’m driving ms lazy to the next adventure.

Western bluebirds and Western meadowlarks outside our windows every day. So much to see and do within 30 minute drive. Several hiking/biking/horse trails right from campground, and lots more hiking in Lincoln NF. Southern NM has been chilly and very windy this time of year, which limited our hiking. Would definitely come back to do more.

Our site was not exactly level but we used our blocks and it was fine. All sites are gravel. Only 2 bars with Verizon but we used our WeBoost and did okay. Open sky for Dish satellite. There is a very nice and informative camphost who can tell you everything to see and do. We visited Fort Stanton, Lincoln and Ruidoso. Ate at Oso Cafe in Capitan. Hiked some of the trails and road on some 4x4 roads. Enjoyed our time here and would definitely stop here again .

Back in & Pull thru sites (mostly level gravel) of which 24 of the 27 sites are 20/30/50. 3 sites are 20 amp only (mostly for tenting). Rate of $10 is based on Senior Discount with America the Beautiful Pass. One of the best small towns in New Mexico Ruidoso & Ruidoso Downs is a 35 minute drive, Fort Stanton is a few miles away and town of Lincoln & Museum (of Billy the Kid Fame) is a short 10 minute drive. The resting spot of "Smokey Bear" is only a short drive as well in Capitan at the Historical Park. Park is open all year around... Highs during the summer is usually in the 80's. Great host (Michael) very knowledgeable and helpful.
On the negative side... no showers & dump station is $30 ($15 with senior discount). Our AT&T hotspot had consistently 4-5 bars (20 mbps download & 3-5 upload). Verizon & T-mobile were marginal
BTW... if you use Google Earth as we do... the map has not been updated since the improvements.

Agree with all the more recent reviews. Beautiful campground in beautiful area. If they had showers we’d stay for a few more days. Price reflects lifetime pass. About 75% full on a Thursday in April. First come, first served.

Learned that the dump is a 2000 gallon vault, not a drain field, hence the cost to dump. Lots of trails to hike but few have a payoff. Also lots of roads to explore.

The campground is open. The camp host is great. Cell service is zero. Great spot to check out Smokey Best museum (5 miles) Billy the kid (9 miles) and Fort Stanton (3 miles).
A steal at $10 a night, water power and a dump station.
FYI it’s $30 to dump for non campers

To just use the dump station if you’re not camping is $30. That’s the first time we’ve seen it cost more to dump than to camp with hookups.
Sites are pretty spread out but most are unlevel.
This campground is really geared for horse people. Most sites have a small corral which is $12 to rent.
The campground is right off the highway near Fort Stanton. It’s really easy to get to and great for any size of RV.
