“The views of the cliffs and mountains are striking”

Due to recent announcements of ongoing construction and no shower rooms available at the other Caballo State Park campgrounds we changed and ventured south to sister Riverside Campground at the last minute. Not much shade here, but the Rio Grande River starts up again after the dam and that at least is nice to have nearby. The views of the cliffs and mountains are striking as well. But this summer’s heat is driving us to make changes to our travel itinerary and the sooner we get into higher elevations the better. We made the road trip from Faywood over the mountain pass on Hwy 152 and it was spectacular. 78 miles of wonderful scenery, a newly paved road, few automobiles, and cool mountain air.

3 bars of ATT and four bars of T-Mobile made being stuck all afternoon inside the trailer somewhat manageable. I cannot fathom what the early natives and pioneers endured not having A/C but then again I imagine the temperatures back then were rarely this stifling. Thanks to all us selfish baby boomers we’ve made our summers now a living hell. Our descendants will likely not hold us in good stead, but rather be disgusted with our despicable, unthoughtful, and indulgent behavior.

A visit to nearby Truth or Consequences proved satisfactory. We stocked up on a few items from WalMart and prepared to head further north. ToC was a charming village full of hot springs and appeared to be an authentic New Mexico town. A nondescript pizzeria called The Outer Edge was a complete surprise. Their sandwiches, salads, and spaghetti were delicious but didn’t get a chance to taste their signature pizza pies.

“Quiet place, tucked away.”

NM State Parks have gone with "Reserve America" now, and thus if you don't get a prior internet reservation (and pay the ridiculous $12 reservation fee per stay on top of your camping fees) it will be highly unlikely to get into many of their parks. This SP actually has several camping areas. Three of them, plus a privative section are all at the actual Park location and are well marked on Campendium. I asked to get this place added because the directions they give you on the reservation are hard to follow.

Riverside is south of the dam, well away from the park entrance in lower terrain and harder to find if you've never been there before...so let me help because most mapping software will lead you on a goose chase. When you exit highway 25 onto 187, take your immediate right. As you approach the dam site, you will find that road blocked. Veer to the right and you will go down in elevation quite a bit. The road is rough so you'll need to go pretty slow to keep from bouncing your rig all around. Once you get past the dam and along the river, the park will open up and for RV spots, you'll want to proceed all the way to the back and then follow the loop in a clockwise rotation. That's it!

As for the park...nice and quiet so far. The showers and restrooms are slightly dated but they keep up on them. On the south end of this location is a group camp that huge and unless occupied is a great place to let your animals run. Enjoy!
