Rito Hondo Reservoir Dispersed Camping

First of all, be in shape and acclimated to the altitude. Campsite is around 10,500 ft. Bring oxygen cans and your ability to rest well at night will increase significantly unless your used to the higher elevation.

The road in can be rough. Washboard gravel roads. We were here in late June 2019 and the evenings can get chilly.

Very quiet and peaceful place to camp for us. At the time we were in a 28’ Airstream with solar and plenty of our own water and propane.

Fishing is excellent in the lake.

The camping sights were well spread out with fire rings. Getting the trailer level was not an issue.

Overall an incredibly positive experience.

Public restroom. No water. Primitive sites. No fees. Small lake for trout fishing. Nearly always sites available but normally other people fishing. A few sites walking distance from lake and restroom. Most sites not so close. Two miles of gravel road into from hwy 149. Road has some washboard so have to drive slow. It is open range so sites can have cow piles and the cows occasionally disrupt campsites. One night they woke us up by rubbing on the camper.
Verizon service is good.
Boat ramp. No powered boats allowed.
Elevation is 10,250 so you’ll have frost mornings even in summer.
