Firmly in the middle of nowhere but had great T-Mobile coverage. Vault toilets available but otherwise nothing else provided. Site #2 in the upper loop has best views like others have mentioned.

Came in 8/7 and stayed 7 nights. Two loops. Front and back. The back lots get filled up by evening. Can always find a spot in the front. Awning helps to provide some shade. Nice views from the top.

Perfect place to camp for peace and quiet. Arrived on a Sunday and we are the only ones here! We got site #2 and in our opinion it offers the best view. There is cell service on at&t, t-mobile, and Verizon. Also managed to get dish network service. Highly recommend!

Quiet, beautiful views, camping spots are far apart, and reasonable cell reception. This is a gem. Don’t miss it!

Visited near the end of April but there were only two other campers on a Saturday night. Nice sites located in the trees but there is some filtered road noise as others have mentioned. Fire ring and picnic tables but no other facilities. Great stop if you’re traveling through the area.

Easy to use a generator without really bothering anyone since they are spaced so nicely.

The Red Shale Campground located in the Custer-Gallatin National Forest is a great campground and it's free. We arrived mid-June and camped in the back loop at site #2. We had great views of the valley and hills behind the campground, each site has a fire ring and table. The sites are spaced well apart from each other and separated by large pine trees, giving a comfortable sense of privacy. The back loop is furthest from the highway, while the front loop does have some highway noise. The campground roads are well maintained, easy to maneuver, and have large loops, with large back-in camp sites. Each loop has a clean vault toilet, however there is no water or trash containers, and this is a first come - first serve campground. We arrived on a Sunday afternoon to get the last site in the back loop which filled up first every night. The front loop did not fill up during our 3-day stay. We had 3 bars with Verizon and we do not have a booster. If you are visiting the Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument this is a great campground to use as a base camp, located approximately 68 miles away. We would return again just for the beauty and peacefulness of this campground!
