Red Sands OHV Area Dispersed Camping

My family and I spent one night here in our 31' RV + flat tow Jeep. It was easy to navigate to our camping spot which was a wide open area between dunes. The sunset view was breathtaking and this morning's sunrise was fun to watch.
We can hear highway traffic a little, but not offputting. A train passed by yesterday evening and that was cool to see the whole long train from one end to the other.

With that said, I would totally come back.
It's good for the soul and a good reminder of what a great artist God is.

We pulled in here not sure what to expect. It took us a while to find a site that was both away from all of the off-roading groups and out of the wind. We chose a site just after the first staging area on the left between some of the dunes and highway. Once we were there the ATV riders seemed to avoid the trails running through the area we were camping in although they did ride late into the night and early the next morning. It was a great area to let the kids play, the sand was fine and soft. We didn't find a lot of trash in dunes we were staying in. The light pollution is minimal so the stars are beautiful and the landscape surrounding was awesome. I wish we stayed longer here.

First Geography: Most OHVs I've been to have a distinct staging/camping area near a massive dune complex usually 30+ ft high, pure sand, and ~1 sq. mile in area. However this area is full of thousands of densely packed 12ft high, <5ft wide, vegetation topped dunes, spanning 5+ miles with no discernible staging/camping area. It's perfect for trail riding and camping, as you can usually find a nice secluded/protected nook between the dunes.
Second, frequency: Numbers are likely skewed due to the shutdowns, Weekdays averaged ~3-5 vehicles/day (everyday at least 1 person); Weekends ~20-30/day (not all at once). Weekdays were locals who trail ride, so they park their trucks and leave on 20+ mile trips, you might not even hear them come or go. Weekenders just go in endless circles never much more than 1/4 mile from the entrance, it turns into a loud albeit entertaining mess.
Third, the sand is loose but it's <1ft deep in most of the accessible valleys/roads, with hard rock underneath, so getting stuck wasn't an issue. No train horns, traffic is light (and can be mitigated by the dunes), no signs of coyotes, cow pastures are 1+ miles away, cell service can be spotty due to the dunes obstructing signal, and there is light pollution on multiple sides.
1+2+3= Selecting where you camp makes a huge difference. If you're staying for some time you should either go down the main trail west for more than 1/4 mile and find a nook, or if you stay near the entrance pay close attention to the established tire marks so you don't end up with 20 people circling your camp for the entire weekend.

Wide open track for off-roading with plenty of space to roam. Fire rings strewn about. Soft, red sand but well packed. Had no trouble pulling a 25’ tt with a van. How deep you go depends on your vehicle. I chose the first spot left through the gate to stay out of the way if any dirt bikes or atvs came to use it, but none did. Only camper for a night. Would have stayed longer but a coming storm ushered me along.

There is highway noise and an occasional train. No big deal for a former city kid. 30 min from white sands.

GPS took me into some private crossing to u-turn for some reason. When you get close just follow the red dot.

We spent one night tenting here with little issue. We pitched our tent in the flattest area and saw no one else during our stay. There is very little signage, but if you turn left after entering the gate you will find a large sand clearing. The sand is quite packed so we had no issue driving on it, even in our small Prius. There was some sound from the highway, but nothing unbearable.
