We drove it daily during our nine-day stay last October and had no troubles. We drive rough roads slowly, but it took us only 20 minutes to drive the 11 miles to the Park’s west entrance. Went even slower pulling our travel trailer, but again no problems. We found it had far less potholes or washboarding than many roads we are on boondocking.

It was an easy ride in from the highway. They must have done some work on the road since the earlier report of it being a bad road. We got passed by a Cadillac doing about 80 MPH on the first stretch (no kidding), and then after the turn it’s a little wash boardy but not bad at all. Pulling a 16 foot Airstream with a Volvo.

As I remember, pot holes weren’t the problem. It was a washboard dirt/gravel road. Just very rough. But it’s been a few years since we were there.

You will not be able to avoid massive potholes. We fortunately came out of it unscathed because we went only like 5 or 6 mph.

Overall the road is good. I would think most any vehicle can get in, including a 2wd car. However, your question is worth noting: potholes and road conditions can change significantly especially after a winter of rain and snow. I didn’t experience a lot of potholes but there were some rough spots. Just go slow for those. Really, I was just going slow to help keep the dust down for the enjoyment of everyone else, including a thankful bicyclist. So many people drive too fast and throw up the dust with no regard for other people.
