Campground has just about every thing . Small lake for fishing and kayaking . Well spaced sites . Great pines trees. Good internet. Many hiking trails and access to trails in adjacent National Forest. Close to town with restaurants, etc. Close to outstanding museum on life of Sam Houston , a truly iconic figure in Texas history.

tight roads thru campground and the road and site area pavement are built up so high you definitely don't want to drive off of it, Texas needs to upgrade some of their older parks, actually they're all old CCC era parks, some need more help than others

I have reserved my spot on the lake for 5 days but when I arrived I realized that my spot is too small for my RV and very uneven. I had to go back and request another site, they put me in one of the "emergency sites" which was more in the back of the park but more even and larger. Make sure that your site will fit your RV. There are electric sites, full-hookups sites. Lots of hiking trails. It is calm during the week but fills up for the weekend. Internet reception is not the best but some areas are better. I noticed that reception was way worse on the lake and better where I was in the back.

I loved this park so much. They caution of alligators - and we saw one while canoeing in the lake. It was a beautiful park. The trees, so much to do there we didn't even get to try the trails and we wanted to. It is close to a cute town and we loved being there. We will be back for a longer visit.

This is a really great park. One of our favorites. Very busy during the summer months because there's lots to do outdoors and it is close to Houston. The lake with its wildlife (including a couple of alligators) makes it very appealing. During non-covid times, there are canoe rentals available, and of course bank fishing and pier fishing is year round. There's snakes, though we didn't see any on our most recent trip. The hiking and biking trails are well maintained and scenic. I enjoy mountain biking, and this is a fun park with relatively easy trail riding which works for our whole family, though there are a few hills which may be tougher for the inexperienced. The park is big enough that you can stay on pavement if you prefer.
The sites are very unlevel, so if you have a big rig, make sure you get one of the pull throughs, since they seem to be the most level. Having to put lumber under our wheels to get it level was a new experience for us. But the park hosts were amazing, and showed me exactly what to do ... Including supplying the boards to drive up on. Of course, next time I'll show up with more leveling blocks. The hosts are amazing and helpful.
Tips: 1) Be prepared to have to use wood or leveling blocks to level your trailer. Bring more than you normally do. If you're a noob, look for the park host and let them know that you need help and they will get you taken care of. I didn't even have to ask for help, a park host just showed up and started helping me, and then another showed up with boards. They were both amazing (Craig and Bullet) and made the situation easy. 2) If you are booked in the pull throughs in the Raven Hill loop, check which side your site is on and enter from the appropriate street at either end of the loop. It is narrow, but the loop is two way. I saw many people on the inner side of the loop, come from the wrong direction because they turned at the first opportunity. They should have passed the first turn, and gone in from the other end of the loop. If you haven't stayed here before, ask the staff which way to go ... and make sure it makes sense for which way your RV will be hooked up.
3) Get a Texas Park Pass to save some money. We're definitely looking forward to going back again. We camped at Huntsville State Park in a 37' Travel Trailer.

I recommend reserving a site from 1 month to 5 months out.
On 2022-12-14 Trying to reserve an RV site for a week. This is a popular campground. Most sites are totally reserved, the ones that have an opening are a day here, and a day there. 3 weeks out, there are many available. Digging down into the campground notes, one can reserve for up to 5 months out.
